I was accepted into a bsn program in September and i got married in December. My question is once i change my last name how will that affect my student nursing number and documentation thats on file at the school. Is it a hard process dealing with name change. Im still going to use my last name which would be my middle name now. And i want my maiden name on my degree i receive once i graduate. I really dont plan to use my married name until my done with school. my husband wants me to use my married name but i dont want to go through the hassle!

Oh and lets be clear this is no fraud my husband will now claim me on his taxes and i will be his dependent. My information will state that I am a married woman !

Thanks! !!!

Those questions would be good to ask to the actual University you will attend. Someone on here may say "no problem" and then in "real life" it is a problem. Just call the school and ask who you need to talk to about your situation.

Your husband will NOT claim you as a dependent on his taxes. The IRS does not permit one to name his spouse as his "dependent." God, what an archaic idea that a wife is her husband's dependent.

If you legally change your name, you probably have to change it with the school as well as they will want your legal name on all official documents.

Why do you want your maiden name on your degree?

You just change your name. You provide your marriage certificate and they change it. It's Simple. You will also have to notify social security and get a name change on your drivers license.

Recently married and went through this. Change social security and drivers license first. Then bring copy of marriage certificate and new drivers license to your school (usually the registrar or student records). They will then change your info. Your student id number shouldn't change and all your documents will still be associated with your id number.

Additionally, you'll just have to include your maiden name when things ask if you've ever gone by another name. Make sure when you order transcripts for things that you include both names.

It would probably be easier to do the name change NOW than to have to try to do it later with the BON. Really, if you can go to the DMV and the social security office, you can then go to the school and get it taken care of there. Really, it can all be done in a day. Did it myself when I got married.

going take care of everything today!

thanks !

Hello there! Let me start by telling you that I faced the same decision as you do now. To be honest with you, you need to decide one way or another and be consistent and thorough in notifying the appropriate parties. It is not that either decision is right or wrong; it is a matter of personal preference. Keep the following in mind, though. If you officially take your husbands name (i.e. change your name through the SSA [social Security Administration]), you will need to notify your program immediately for purposes of financial aid and CORI/SORI requirements.

I was accepted into my program under my maiden name in June and got married in August of that same year. I had already registered for classes and whatnot with my maiden name and planned to take my husband's last name. I decided to suck it up and deal with it as soon as possible in order to maintain consistency and avoid potential obstacles throughout my schooling, degree/diploma and licensing process. So, I changed my name with the SSA at the end of September, notified the registrar and nursing department at my school of the change as soon as I got my new SS card. I provided them with my school's update of information form and copy of my marriage license. You should call your school's registrar and ask them what they need from you!

At the beginning of the following semester, I had to submit a new CORI form. You will need to provide your updated drivers license for the new CORI form, as I learned on the day of our 10-hour orientation when I had to drive across town during our lunch break to the RMV in order to meet the deadline. Additionally, if you graduate, take your board exams and get licensed with your maiden name, then choose to later change your name, you will have to go through a process of changing it with the BON. I am not positive what fees may be charged or what the process entails, but you may want to go online and find some information specific to your state.

**In regards to your question about student ID numbers, I'd ask your school registrar because it may vary between schools. But, my ID number stayed the same to ensure that records and transcripts were all kept in line.

In the end, I'm sure you have your personal reasons for whatever you may choose. I just wanted to share my name change experience with you, in case it may help. One piece of advice that I wish someone told me... if you do initiate a change... order your student nurse name badge/ID asap with your new last name.. :) Best wishes!

I did the sorta "cheating" way. I hyphenated. It was extremely difficult for me to change my name after I moved to NJ because of their specific requirements. Long story short, this is my second marriage and it's been impossible for me to get my original marriage certificate from TX which has the "link" to my maiden name and my current name". So while I am still M1Name, after we were married he started to put me as M2Name on EVERYTHING. Caused a major issue when I got accepted into nursing school because at the school I was M1Name, and insurance said I was M2Name. My solution was just to hyphenate. My husband didn't like the idea of me keeping M1Name really, but it's the name I share with my children and it was important I kept that. Which, he knows and realizes. Also it saved me a ton of work and frustration in the end.

Hope you got everything you needed to done! And that no one gave you too many issues! AND CONGRATULATIONS!
