Mean nursing instructors

I understand how you can feel that way.....HOWEVER, we would need specfics before commenting....and honest answers about how YOU were perceived in clinicals and specfic situations relating to patient care/safety/ reasons they gave you for failing.....If you can honestly answer these stipulations...I personally promise to comment back on your thread.

Has anyone failed nursing on here and felt it was the attitude of the nursing staff. I have never failed classes, but I have failed clinicals twice and I felt like I was treated unfairly. Any suggestions?

What did they say the reason was that they failed you and why do you think it was unfair?

There is 1 particular teacher on our staff who I, and many others, feel is better and resentful to students. She has done some vicious things to students... one of the best examples is when a student's 17 year old son died 2 days before a test, not only did she have to make up the test in essay format she also had to turn in a 3 page concept map/care plan (which is 3x bigger than what we normally do). She did not have to do this, as another student who missed the same test because she had a baby did not have to write the care plan and got to take ther regular test...

I don't beleive this particular teacher could make anyone fail out with it tied to her, but she definatly will make it as difficult as possible.

I could tell you my horror story about this horrible woman, but I'll refrain.

I think that is totally wrong! But I have a feeling that there are some legal ramifications when there is a medical "handicap" or STD situation but nothing for someone with a death in the family. Sounds like the instructor was CHA (covering her a--) for the birth but didn't need to for the death. Very sad and unfair.

Toomuchrock.....could you email me about this particular teacher? I am new to this site and you are a former student of the school I will attend.....just haven't figured out yet how to email you or get to you! AHHHHH! Navigating this site as a newbie can be quite frustrating.

I still have bad memories of 1 instructor. I was in my 2nd semester and had a 91 year old pt. who was a full code. She was healthy for the most part ( considering her age ). She came in for a hemeroidectomy. I went down to OR with her, stayed with her in PACU. In recovery, her BP was 100/70, HR was 70s to low 80s, RR was 16-18, afebrile. So we transport her to the unit where I would take over care for the next 2 hours. First set of vitals on the unit were same as PACU, then next set in 15 minutes BP was 94/62, HR was 60s, RR was 14, pulse ox at 92% room air. ( she had hx of heart failure I think, it's been a while ) So, I do another set of vitals in 15 minutes, BP this time 88/59, HR was still 60s, RR was 14 and oxygen was 90%. So I asked a fellow student to recheck my vitals ( she got the same ). I asked her to watch my pt while I went to get the instructor. Could not find instructor. I go to look at my pt and " something is not right ". So I check Vitals 1 more time, BP is now 70/38 , HR is now low 50s, RR is at 12 and oxygen is 82%. I put on oxygen and go look for instructor or the staff RN who was assigned to her. I get my teacher and she comes to the room and grabs the chart. Then she says to me, " Now I don't know why you are so worried. Look at these meds she's on. She is not going to code or anything. She is old but healthy. This is not an emergency. She'll be fine." ( I am still deeply troubled by those words )

Long story short: Next day we come in and I have to have a new patient because that lady had to be transfered to ICU where she coded.

Yes, I told the staff RN the situation with my pt. asap after my instructor was out of site. And I wrote a letter to the Dean regarding the incident, but not until I graduated and had my diploma.

Was there something else I could have or should have done? I still wonder what I could have done differently to get my instructors attention?Frankly, according to others in same class she was just evil!

There are always going to be instructors that can and will make your clinical experience a miserable, stressful time. But, many times these are the instructors you can learn from the most. I just keep thinking its another hoop you have to jump to get through nursing school. Its important to think about the positives and do whats necessary to get through the rough days. Nothing comes to stay, everything comes to pass. Thats what my granny always use to say. LOL...

To all who focus on the students for the problem of institutionalized meanness in nursing, get real!!! The sociopaths who vent their venom on student nurses are not the fault of the students. Some nursing programs are rude and hateful to all students in general whereas others allow their faculty to select their own targets for vicious personal attacks. In either case, such unprofessional behavior is indefensible. It is also unsafe because it diverts students' thought processes to anger, fear, and resentment instead of focusing on patient care. There is no setting in which bullying and mobbing are acceptable. Reprehensibly bad behavior is just that, reprehensible. Being a nurse or a nurse educator does not change that fact. Legislation is needed to impose criminal and civil penalties on nurses and nurse educators who refuse to conform their behavior to professional decorum.

I'm sorry. I don't see anything wrong with what the instructor did.

Instructor's have the right to give a make up exam in any format - at least at my school they do. They typically don't, but they can. And each instructor is allowed to address each student as they see fit.

If the instructor did something unfair to YOU - which you still haven't divulged - then I would see your program director. Otherwise, stay out of it.
