My aunt has agreed to buy me a stehoscope for my graduation/passing nclex present. my question is what kind should i get? I know Littmann are supposed to be good but is that the best one to get? please let me know what you think. :wink2:

Littmans are probably the best, and there are different grades of Littmans. Do a search on here, this is been discussed at length several times and you can get a lot of info.

You don't need a very expensive stethoscope so early in your nursing career. Additionally, the expensive stethoscopes have the tendency to "walk off". Prestige is a good, inexpensive brand of stethoscope. I also love the NurseMates stethoscopes.

I lost so many over the years, I finnally surrendered and got cheap ones and for some reason they don't "walk". LOL I do just fine with the cheapos.

I would get a medium grade Littman if someone else was doing the buying. Not a very expensive one, just a good one.

I would go for one that has a single lumen instead of double lumen. the sound is more pure in the single.

Medium grade Littman definately the way to go, as Tweety stated. It's worth it to have a decent steth, but you don't need to have it be super-expensive. I have found the cheapest Littmans will beat hands-down almost all others. You don't have to spend a lot to get a cheap-moderate Littman. And it will be worth it. Don't waste money on cheap steths. You use them too much to do this!

Uh huh....

I tell patients I can hear through a cinder-block wall with it. :monkeydance:

I like my Littman...I can't remember which one I have though! I think it is the one that costs around $60. Prestige is also a good one...that is the one our ambulance service uses and I like it a lot...it seems to muffle out a lot of the background noise. Ultrascopes are pretty and everyone I know who has one likes it a lot.

I love my Littman Master Classic II. It is a middle grade stethoscope of those that they carry. It cost me less than $100.00 even with my name engraved on it. As others have said nice ones can sometimes "walk off." I've not had a problem with that personally. I would recommend spending the little extra to have your name engraved, as a safeguard.

You can do a search and find sites that sell Littmans for less than Littmans direct site does. I've heard of some ppl getting them on EBay even, I don't know if you could get it engraved through them or not though.

I also love my master classic II. In fact I just got my second one. Can't live without it.
