Laying off everyone

No. Charge nurses were just added last year. I am in the midwest {Illinois}

No lay offs, but a lot of low census. We have had one wing closed for a couple of weeks. In staff meetings we are urged to come up with money saving ideas, and told we are seriously in the red. On the other hand we have a huge addition currently under way...:uhoh21:

I'm not sure how many people have been laid off, but it's definitely going on at my hospital despite census being high. They are cutting hours for everyone. We went from having 2 CNAs on the floor to 1 and just the other night, they made our 1 CNA go home early. We nurses are being canceled too because they have contract nurses they have to use. We keep joking that RNs will now be housekeeping, RTs, phlebotomists, cooks etc but they way things are going it may be true.

I am in Australia and one BIG HUGE hospital is currently in the media for the amount of layoffs. They have restructured the senior staff, have layed off so many cleaners that it is causing patient problems (patients being held in corridors and supply closets due to unclean rooms) and also they had to privatise their kitchen because they took off so much staff. It's ridiculous.

Our hosptial does a really good job at maintaining a good nurse:staff ratio. In many ways, its not just the hospitals fault but alot of the money managment actually boils down to nurses and house sups! Nurses must make sure that all supplies are counted and charged for, as well as not overusing products (those dry-flos that go on every bed! they are VERY expensive and nurses put 20 of them on the bed! You only need 1. ) House sups are ultimately in charge of sending nurses home if they are not needed, which short-term really sucks, but it helps in the long term.

I know it sucks to share some of the blame instead of putting it all on other people, but its what it really boils down to. everyone must do their part to keep raises coming in and hours being kept.

we are hiring and expanding. But Texas is the only state that has experienced growth while everyone else was in a recession. I am sorry you have to suffer thru this. It is such a strain

I was hired into a giant health care company that owns several hospitals, nursings homes, etc. I started my 3rd job in 9 months due to getting bumped around. But I'm not complaining because I'm finally in a hospital lol instead of LTC. Thank goodness for our union because they cannot cut hours against workers' wishes and the lay offs during the merging they did a few months ago were minimal.
