Hmmm, is it possible there are mental health issues with the daughter? Sounds that way to me. The other thing to think of is this, who is to say that is even her father's pill? I am assuming it is a massive dining area? How many residants are on the very same medication? I would just blow it off, she sounds unstable.

Many times in LTC the family has difficulty accepting the reality of the condition of the resident. However, when the family begins to see reality, it is very hard and they almost always take it out on the staff. You are in a position to help them, as well as the resident if you can remain calm, refrain from arguing and remember your Rogerian questioning. You are where you are and are doing what you are doing for reasons that are not always apparent to you right away. Good luck.

I don't know what it is about facilities. Managers always HAVE to beat up on the nurse, oh yes oh course the nurse was wrong.

Take a deep breath and see what happens.

I couldn't stand this kind of stuff when I worked in a hospital. It is so better now that I do home care and have a supvr. that actually backs me up.

Good luck and don't let them get to you.

Good Lord, this is an incident? How ridiculous. Sounds like your manager needs to get out from behind her desk, roll up her sleeves, and get a reality check by helping out on the floor.

What can I say except I hope the lumps and bruises you get from this incident heal quickly. Families can double the stress of an already stressful and difficult job, but we just have to grin and bear it most times. Since this daughter seems to have a hx of unrealistic expectations from her father, the manager may gently but clearly state that and attempt to clarify the real condition of her fathers condition. Yes, I know that is a load of bull but it sounds encouraging. Just keep being a good nurse and CYA. Good luck.

Are you sure you didn't forget to give the pill to him ??? I know how easy it is to just set the pill aside for him and tend to other matters, you probably just forgot and now the guilt is getting to you enough that you want to run away right ??? Fess up and be done with it is my suggestion !!

I'd fight tooth and nail against any sort of disciplinary measure taken over this. You're right, there's no way of telling how long that pill was lying about. How many of us have broken a glass on our kitchen floor and spent an hour sweeping and mopping to ensure it was all picked up, only to discover a small piece a week or more later? It's just the way things go.
