Is it possible to work in NY area with an ADN?

Hey guys--I am an associate degree nurse working on my BSN. Just wondering how hard it is to get a job in New York City and surrounding areas w/ an associate degree? I work L&D, Postpartum and antepartum and can circulate in the OR during a c-section.

What do you think?

Try the NYC health and hospitals, (jacobi, bellevue, lincoln, etc.) they definetely hire ADN, also Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, a short train ride from NYC. Einstein in the Bronx, Our Lady of Mercy in the Bronx, doing my Ob-gyn rotation there in fall semester, and a bunch hospitals on Long Island, the large medical centers in Manhattan, NY Presbyterian, Cornell seem to want BSN but if you have experience give it a try they will probably give you an interview. Good luck.

Thanks for the ideas! :)

you can also try Methodist hospital in brooklyn and maimonedes.

I wanted to bump this thread instead of starting a new one because it asks the question I was going to ask. The last posts are a couple of years old, but I was curious to know whether ADN's are still marketable and in demand in the NYC area (notwithstanding the recession and hiring freezes). I am currently looking to pursue an accelerated BSN which is my first choice degree. However, I am looking to ADN programs as well in the event I am unable to get into the BSN programs or unable to afford them. I know the larger hospitals lean towards BSNs but I would not mind working at a smaller hospital or HHC for the experience if I ultimately get the ADN.

Just looking for updated info, thanks!

If all of the BSN graduates are having extremely difficult time finding jobs, imagine how hard your job search will be with an ADN. The first thing out of everyone's mouth is "Do you have a BSN?" BSN graduates have taken upwards of a year to find employment. Hospitals with magnet status are going to take BSN over ADN because they need to maintain a certain %age of BSN prepared nurses, the only places I've seen on my job search that take ADN are city hospitals and Continuum Health Partners and if they have a choice between ADN or BSN, they're going to go with BSN. Which greatly narrows your choices down. I think it may be easier to start in a nursing home that way you can at least say ok I'm an ADN and I have 2 years experience. I think hospitals may be willing to accept that compared to an ADN with no experience at all.

Your insight was invaluable and helps me plan accordingly. Much appreciated!

No prob, Paco!

Beth Israel Hospital, and by extension their nursing school are part of Continuum Health Partners, so it kind of does make sense they would hire ADN/AAS nurses. Would kind of look bad otherwise.

I figured as much which is why it is one of the 2 ADN programs I have been looking into. I hear only good things about them. Thanks!

have you ever considered school nursing PM me!!!!!

Absolutely possible for you to find a job with ADN, but put in your resume and stress that you are working on your BSN. I graduated with an ADN, am finishing up my BSN, but that was a huge factor on some job interviews. Some places will always want BSN preferred but once you let them know you are enrolled and possibly finishing up soon ( i don't know your status), then some places will love to have you on board. I don't know much about the hospital aspect, but home care is always open to ADN's. ;)

Based on my recent experience, having an ADN only in NY means NO JOB for you. The first question is always do you have a BSN, even for those with a previous BA in a non nursing field. Many of us new grads are still without work after 9 months of applications. The job market in NY is TERRIBLE. The only way in to a hospital is knowing someone high up in the organization. Even with a BSN, without 1 year of med surg experience it is nearly impossible to land that first job. My fellow grads have taken case manager positions, desk jobs, doctor's office jobs, etc... Very few (4/65) are working in a hospital and 5 in home health, with the rest returning for a BSN. Do your BSN and get an externship/internship. Apply for every residency program you can find while in senior year and be sure to save some money for the months you are job hunting. There are a lot of us still looking that graduated June 2010 and soon a whole new "new grad" batch will be out there competing with us. It is difficult to keep your chin up, but what choice do we have.
