Introduction

Hello all!

I will be starting my first school nurse job officially after Labor Day but will be going in all next week for professional development.

Prior to this position, I was an ER nurse, worked in sexual and reproductive health, and community health. I am really excited to make this transition, but also terrified. I am bracing myself for the fact that I will probably not receive any training so any words of wisdom, resources, or inside tips would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking forward to becoming more active on this board as soon as I know what the heck I am doing!

Welcome! You have such a great wealth of experience in what is "normal," and conversely, what is NOT normal.

What you are struggling with is not nursing care. It's the autonomous nature of the school nurse. It will take you a year to fully understand. If you'll use the search feature (upper right) you'll find a lot of tips for the new nurse.

You know what you're doing. You just need to know how to be an essential part of the school environment.

Welcome! Use this board early and often. We have a lot to contribute and all come from interesting and diverse backgrounds. I have learned so much from the nurses here.

Hello NursicoRN23!

Welcome to allnurses!!!

You have come to the right place to learn about school nursing. This is a very active forum with loads of pro school nurses willing to share tips and information from their collective wealth of experience. Feel free to ask away. No question is a dumb question. They will tell it like it is.

I'm one of the delayed starts! I came back and went "All of these new people! Must welcome!"

Hi. My name is Trinidad Valdez and today was my first real day of school. I work in the same school as Mrs. Girard (who posts here) and she encouraged me to join. I'm looking forward to learning from people here. I'm fortunate to have Mrs. Girard, she watched me Friday as I did my first two students and I was happy for that when went "solo" today.

I've been an LPN for three years, but this is a new field for me.

Welcome! You have a history similar to mine (ER nursing, then some time in womens reproductive health, followed by school nursing)

The first year was CRAZY for me and honestly had me questioning my decision...this forum here was a fantastic find and has provided me with more resources then my mentor within the school district.

It has been very much a learn as you go process. It was quite a transition for me as in my district there is no one over seeing you (sure there is administration but they have ZERO clue as to what the school nurse actually does)...I hated this fact the first year but now I love it, they leave me be, I do what i need to do and come to them when I need something (backing it up with information on why I need it) and they have always supplied ?
