You're definitely not too old! I will be finishing my BSN in March, 2014. I am also looking ahead to probably becoming a nurse practitioner so if I'm not too old there is NO WAY you are. :-)

I don't think you're to late by any means! Your situation sounds a lot like mine... On I have two kids and am now married. I waited to go to school until I knew I wouldn't ruin my GPA and could afford it. Now, two years in, I still have my 4.0 and will graduate in 2015 (I went part-time or a while so I could work full-time). I plan to go on for either my FNP or CNM. I thought about going to med school, but after researching an NP is a better fit for me.

You can do it!!

You are definitely not too old! You'll be working until your 60s or 70s anyways so you will have many decades as a NP :)

If you look around your classes, im sure you will find many students who are older than you. If its something you want to pursue, do it.

You are never too old to better yourself. I am 27 with two kids. I had a few prereqs, but I quit school when I got pregnant and waited 7 years for both of them to get to school-aged (hubby works...one income house) so I could start back. It has taken me two years to finish up my classes, and I applied to my schools ASN program last week! I not nearly the oldest in my fundamentals class. I would say at least half of my class is my age or older! I plan to get an MSN and maybe teach some day. My hubs will retire at least 12 years before me, but I am totally ok with that, because I am finally doing for myself what I have always wanted to do. You will still be plenty young when you graduate, with plenty of years left in you to work comfortably. Go for it! And good luck. :)

2. Perhaps this is just an insecurity of mine, but I feel it's a little insulting to those who are older and are just getting started. I'm not even that old at 26, but still feel slighted when someone who is a bit younger cries out about how they're too old for nursing. Just my point of view and I genuinely hope I don't offend anyone by it.

22 going on 23 and in my first semester of pre-reqs. Definitely not too old to pursue Nursing or any other major. As long as it's what's best for you and your future, go for it.

Hello all! :)
So I'm in my first semester of my nursing pre-reqs at a local community college..and I love it. I love school, and I really enjoy learning everything and I actually find myself going ahead, because I just love doing the school work. I am 23 years old, soon to be 24..and I'm just thinking about my future, I've always thought about becoming a nurse practitioner, but now I'm thinking I missed the boat because I am already 23...
By the time I am done getting my RN it will be June 2014. I then want to start the road to become a practitioner..I'm just wondering if I am being a little ridiculous. I took 5 years off of school to work full time and pay bills, etc. (I have pretty much raised myself since 16..) Going to college until I could claim independent status in NYS was my only option, and here I am in my 1st semester..(of prereqs - pulling a 4.0 by the way! YAY!)
I want to know what everyone thinks..am I being a little farfetched, and I already to old to pursue this...

You are NEVER too old to follow your dreams. I just turned 27 and I just finished my pre reqs. By the time I finish my ADN program I will be 29. It was about 4-5 years ago when I finally got my head straight and decided to stop playing around in college. It took me almost 5 years to finally finish my pre reqs while working full time. Fortunately, in that time I was able to save enough money so I don't have to work during nursing school or take out loans to pay for my tuition (I'm at a junior college so it's not too much). Sometimes I too feel like I'm "too old" compared to other students but I'm proud to say that I have not accumulated nor will I accumulate debt in school. Had I decided on nursing school 10 years ago I would have had to take out loans to fund my school. Now I'm older and I don't have to. I'm happy with the path that I have taken and I hope you can find that happiness as well! :)
