I am looking into an LPN to RN program

Published

I am looking into an LPN to RN program. I work full time days, so need to do something online. I have checked into The College Network but the one thing I dont like is that after you finish the program you still have to have 250 clinical hrs. I would have to find a preceptor in different areas of nursing, go to their job and get checked off on skills. Has anyone completed this program or going through it now? They are affiliated with Excelsior College, so should I not go through College Network? I welcome any advice!

DON'T sign up with TCN; they are NOT affiliated with Excelsior!!!

There have been plenty of threads about TCN; search on this site and in the forums about Excelsior.

I believe they have been sued by a state attorney general as well.

Best wishes.

TCN is absolutely positively NOT AFFILIATED WITH EXCELSIOR COLLEGE. If the rep is telling you so it is a blatant lie. Read this

I don't know about those programs myself (although based on LadyFree's and JustBeachyNurse's advice, it's not sounding good). For me though, finding your own preceptor and setting up your own clinicals sounds like a pretty big hassle and stress. My ADN program had sooo many clinicals in different settings--many many shifts in med-surg, plus shorter times in OR, perioperative, ED, ICU, chem dep, school (not sure why school, since ADNs can't BE school nurses?)....

Check out programs at your local brick-and-mortars. The place I'm going for my RN-BSN right now actually has mostly hybrid (reduced class time plus online work), and even some completely online classes. It's very convenient for this working mom, and all of our clinicals (community health) are set up for us.

Oh Sweet Jebus DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THE COLLEGE NETWORK FOR ANYTHING!

They are currently under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, the Indiana State Attorney General, a Class Action Lawsuit in Ohio, and lord knows who else.

They will sell you very expensive materials you do not need on a contract you can't get out of. On top of that, Excelsior College is changing their nursing theory exam process...you will be required to take Excelsior's online course before you are permitted to challenge the exams, so you definitely will not use or need the 'content learning modules' that The College Network will try to sell you for $625.00 EACH (times 8). And they KNOW you won't test all those exams before July 1, 2015, but they will sell the CLM's to you anyway--but by that time they have all your money and you will not be able to get it back.

Please run as far away as you can from anything The College Network touches right now. You don't need them. It is much less expensive to do everything on your own than use test-prep companies *coughfraudscough*

There are no online lvn to bsn programs. BUT South University is a way to do all the pre-reqs online. But you actually have to go to class for your RN. Although there is Indiana State, but that depends on where you live. For example in California you can't do Indiana State. Do you live in FL? Asking because of your name, if so check out Galen, they have a part time or part of line program I think.

I have been an LPN for over 20 yrs and want to now get my RN. I work during the day, so need an evening program or online courses. I'm finding that I need math before I take pre-algebra, then take pre-algebra before taking college algebra. I dont want to spend yrs in school doing pre-requisites! Has any other nurses went through this as well and if so, where did you go to get your RN? I am feeling very discouraged right now. Has anyone did the program through excelsior college? #feeling lost

thanks for your help!

I can't be of too much help to you because I just started nursing school myself (or the process to try to get into nursing school). But I will tell you that I'm discouraged too. I had my course sequence mapped out and had even planned it all out with an advisor before finding out that I needed a few more pre reqs before I could take the nursing pre reqs. This tacked on an extra semester :( though it is discouraging, I'm trying to dwell on the positives. If I work hard now and apply myself even in areas of school that don't seem to matter, I can only be better for it. Though the pre reqs seem to last forever, eventually they will end and the core nursing classes will fly by. You'll be happy for all your hard work once you can officially write RN after your name! Just keep thinking about how great it will feel to write that for the first time! Good luck to you!

She believed she could, so she did.

Is there a way for you to complete evening classes or online classes for your pre-req's?

Have you looked into what your area schools have to offer?

I too had to take pre, intro, intermediate which was the hardest, and then College Alegebra.

I wasn't too thrilled about it either. But take heart, it prepared me in more ways than I thought it would. It developed strong critical thinking skills and dosage calculations and formulas with rationales are a breeze for me. That was over 10 years ago and I don't regret it, I recommend it. If you haven't taken the teas, this will also help with that.

I also used tutors on campus every week and aced my exams.

Don't worry about how long it takes. You just do what's in front of you, then take your next semester.....and repeat until graduation! Good luck. It's worth taking.

It took me a full year of Fall, Spring and Summer to get my pre-reqs done. I began working 2 double shifts over the weekend and 1 eight hour day and went to a local community college and went full time for my LVN-ADN. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, but I did it, even went on to get my BSN, and I'm about to enter school in the Spring to become a Nurse Practitioner.

Long story short.......for some, it just depends on how badly you want it.

Idk where you are in florida, but herzing orlando has a bridge program that takes 10 months to complete if you have no prereqs to do, 18 months if you have to do them all. Most prereqs are online. They have an evening program.
