I didn't get accepted

Published

I am a student at Davenport in Dearborn, MI. I completed all my prereq's, had the second highest entrance exam score, (they use the HESI), and a gpa of 3.47! I followed their program to the letter; I haven't received a letter of acceptance yet. When I started at Davenport, lots of pre-nursing students shared their horror stories with me. The stories all sounded alike: good gpa's, good entrance scores, prereq's done...then they would change the admission requirements! I feel defeated; I am almost ready to give up on my nursing career plans.

Can anyone suggest another school? I have checked all the community colleges; waiting lists are phenomenal everywhere in Michigan! I am 39, a single mom of five..I don't have forever.

Well, unless you got a letter stating you weren't accepted..there's always hope. Perhaps they will have a few last minute decisions to not continue with the program. At any rate, never give up on what you really want to do!

Specializes in CNA - starting LPN school January 2009!!.

Never say never! At least, not until your get your rejection letter. ;)

I am in the same boat as you, waiting to find out whether I got into an ADN program with a January 09 start date.

I'm not familiar with Michigan schools, as I live in FL, but I wonder if you have considered doing LPN first, then bridging to RN later? I applied to an LPN school, because the RM schools in my area are next to impossible to get into. People with 3.8 regularly get turned away. However, with the bridge program LPN-RN, everyone gets in, it is a waiting list. I figure I don't mind waiting on a waiting list for a few years to become an RN, if I am happily working as an LPN while I wait!

Anyway, I just found out about a week ago that I got a seat in the LPN class for January 2009! So, it does help ease my verves while I wait for the RN acceptance. I know I am guaranteed to start nuring school in January, I'm just waiting to find out if it will be RN or LPN!!

I am very sorry, but keep your head up and don't give up hope! My program (I go to the University of Akron in Akron, OH...if you feel like going out of state it's a great school! :wink2:) sent out the acceptance letters first and then a few weeks later they sent out the letters for those who were placed on the waiting list (or those who got rejected). I got my letter and a couple of my other friends did too, so I was very excited, but one of my good friends did not! She had a 3.3 - 3.4 GPA and all of us were so certain that she was going to get in. She was planning on transferring to a different school that would allow her to begin clinicals for this fall but she wanted to know for sure what spot she was on the waiting list before transferring, that way she would know if she still had a chance or not. The nursing dept. doesn't like calls asking about that stuff so they simply told her to wait until the letters come which should be soon, even though she told them that she needed to know NOW. She got her letter that same day and SHE GOT ACCEPTED!!! The college of nursing LOST her file which explains why she got her letter a lot later than those who also got in. SO NEVER GIVE UP HOPE! :heartbeat

of course she's still thinking about transferring...and I certainly hope not

Did you ever consider going for your LPN and then taking a bridge to RN? I couldnt find an RN program around here (MA) that didnt have a waiting list, but the LPN program got me in right away. I start this Sept, and will be done next June. I can then work as a nurse and do the LPN-RN bridge.

Good luck, and if this is your dream, dont give up hope!!!

Hi,

Are you up for a degree? You are close to Ann Arbor. U of M has a great selection of programs. So does Oakland U. The drive isn't so bad from Dearborn. Then there is University of Detroit-Mercy, close to you. Madonna College. Check Marygrove - not sure if they have a nursing program. Don't forget Wayne State - a great school. Did you check Wayne County Community College? (I don't know if they have the long waiting lists like Oakland and Macomb Comm Colleges have.)

Look into Baker College.

If you can go a little further, there's Michigan State in Lansing.

Good luck with your search.

What about uof m flint?

It is so stressful....I know how you feel. :redbeathe

This is what happened to me: The school that I applied to misread my transcripts. I was almost forced to wait 2 more years because they didn't understand that I had taken A & P (w/ labs) when I earned my Psychology degree.

I know.....unbelievable!

So, even if you are not accepted (which you may be accepted and just don't know it yet), you may want to contact the Admissions personnel and make sure that they are reading the transcripts correctly and not assuming things.

Good Luck and don't give up!!

Oh and I also highly recommend an LPN-to-RN program. It saved me a lot of money.

I know how you feel. The first college I applied to did not accept me and I also had a high GPA. There were just so many students that applied. I was discouraged because I am 39 as well, with three kids and do not want to spend the next five years in school. The school that rejected me told me of another school about an hour away. I applied and got in! I start this fall. It just so happened that my GPA calculated out even higher with their program. So just look at all of the different schools even if it may be a bit of a drive. You can always carpool. Good luck!

Actually most community colleges in michigan are doing away with the wait list. Henry ford has one and you can put your name on it as a backup. Wayne county community college district has switched to admissions based on GPA (but I think you may need to do 12 credits there before you can apply). Oakland community college admits based on GPA not on waitlist. Check out your options-- there are A TON in this area. If you did so well on the Hesi you could apply to Macomb community college and have a good shot-- they're hard to get in and admit based on GPA as well. The list goes on...... I haven't heard anything good about Davenport (just students venting about them-- you're not the first or the last probably), but I have heard good things about all of these other programs so definitely look into them!

Good luck! If you keep applying you're bound to get in somewhere-- I know the competition is fierce in our area. :(

Get on every wait list that you can sign up for. It may be a long wait or it may be shorter than you think. Most people do sign up for every wait list which makes people think they will have to wait a long time and then they get the letter unexpectedly. It's the same way around here. They tell you 4 years but people get in after waiting 2. But if you don't sign up you will never get in. I was always told to have that plan B ready if I didn't get in my LVN program.

Good luck :)
