How long is your orientation??

6 months for me-but that's for the ICU.

will be 6 months (can have up to two years if needed)...also ICU

Mine was 12 weeks on a Med-Surg/Neuro floor as a new nurse. When I transferred to Oncology they were going to give me another 8-12 weeks. I talked them into 6-7. The educator was on maternity leave anyway and I wasn't going to get more than 6-7 weeks on Oncology specific info anyway. They didn't want me to take patients for the first week when I had already been a nurse for a little while. That lasted two days and then I was tearing out my hair.

12 weeks on a progressive care unit (not really enough)

Mine will be about 10-12 weeks on a vascular surgical floor.

6-9 months -OR. That's before I take call on my own...

I'm on a med-surg/oncology floor. I had 6 weeks of 12 hour shifts. So, actually 18 days before I was on my own. Felt like I could have used a couple more though. Been off of orientation 2 days and so far it's been going OK I think.

Two years?????????? Sorry, if you can't cut it in six months, our organization isn't going to invest two years. That's generous, but not wise in my opinion.

12 weeks in med surg. More if needed (but not two years.LOL) Not sure about other specialities.

I was about to say that 2 years seems like an awfully long time for orientation. But I would think after 6-9 months would be enough time. I'm sure you'll be good after that amount of time. :)

2 years is too long. i would worry about any nurse that needed that much orientation. and what hospital will pay for that?? i think that if you weren't comfortable after 6-9 months, it would be time to reevaluate career options.
