Article Topics

For this contest, we want to focus on one of the biggest issues facing the Nursing Profession and Healthcare today - the Nursing Shortage.  This is not the first nursing shortage in the history of the nursing profession, but it is probably the largest with the biggest effect on the healthcare and wellbeing of the patients.  Now I know many nurses do not believe there is a true nursing shortage because there are plenty of nurses “out there”, but they just aren’t working.  They have left the workplace for various reasons - leaving a huge shortage of nurses IN THE WORKPLACE. There is also a shortage of nursing educators resulting in smaller nursing school classes and fewer new nurses.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

  • Are nurses leaving the profession or just their bedside job?
  • Why are Nurses Leaving the Workplace?
  • Where are the nurses who have left the workplace
  • Systemic issues
  • Overworked - underpaid?
  • Burnout
  • Unsafe working conditions
  • Unsafe staffing ratios
  • COVID concerns
  • What impact have/will recent events had/have on the nursing shortage?
  • Moral injury
  • Compassion fatigue
  • Not appreciated
  • How to bring back the nurses
  • The bottom line - finances? It should be the patient
  • How to resolve the nursing shortage issue
  • Work-related PTSD
  • Shortage of qualified nursing faculty causing nursing students to be turned away
  • Hospital administration
  • Violence in the workplace
  • Current events that have negatively impacted the nursing workforce
