Hours of Nursing school?

Published

Hello all! I will be applying to 2 different community colleges this winter for their RN programs. I will have all of the classes already finished ( Psyc, A&P, etc) except the actual RN classes that I can't finish without being in the program. I was wondering what the typical hours are for a student like me?

Specializes in Emergency Department.

It will depend a lot on the program you are in, since they are all a little different. My first semester we were in class 4 days a week for about 4 hours a day, give or take an hour. When clinicals started we were 2 days of class, and 2 days of clinicals. Clinical days were about 6-8 hours each. Lecture days started at 0800 and clinical days at 0600. Skip ahead to the end of the program where I am now and its 4-5 days of lecture for 8 hours, starting at 0800. The weeks we have clinical days the day starts at 0600, and a few at 0900, and they are around 10 hours long. One of the sites we go to requires me to leave my house at 0400 to make it there by 0600 which makes for a very long day. Now there are days here and there where we will only go in for an hour or maybe two and then we are done for the day. Like I said it will all depend on the program you get into, but you learn to manage it. Good Luck!!

I am in my third week (first semester). I have lecture 2 days a week for 1 1/2 hours each and clinicals for 6 1/2 hours once a week. The second semester will be the same also.

I am in my second week of my first semester and we have one lecture class, one lab class and then our clinical. I am lucky because my lab and lecture are on the same days where other students are not. Any way, I have a 2 hour lecture and then I have a 2.5 hour lab and that's it! We start our actual clinical sites the third week in which will be next week. We will either start at 7 or 8 in the morning and finish around 2 or 3. I heard that when we get into our second semester, we will have lecture, lab and clinical, but then after a few weeks our lab will get dropped. So it will only be lecture and clinical.

Let's see, 1st term we had 5 weeks of lecture Mon-Thur 900-1130, skills lab for an hour on Mon afternoon, 3 hours of head to toe assessment practice on Thursday afternoons. Next 5 weeks, clinicals 2 evenings per week, about 6 hours each day with at least 5 hours of patient prep write up the night before or morning of, 2 days of lecture 2-1/2 hours 0900-1130. Oh and tests every other Friday the entire term.

2nd term the same, 3rd term switched to morning clinicals.

We also signed up to demonstrate skills for our lab instructors.

When we start up again this year, lectures will be on different days and in the afternoon, clinicals will be a little longer. By the 3rd term this year we will have no lectures and only clinicals with a RN preceptor, IV class, NCLEX prep.
