Help... im about to give up :(

Published

I am currently enrolled in a community college trying to get into their nursing program, but A&P I really screwed me up. The first time i took it i withdrew and the second time i got a C-. I fulfill all of their requirement except for A&P because they required at least a C or higher. So I can no longer get into the nursing program at my school. My current GPA is a 3.2. I dont want to give up my dream of becoming a nurse but it seems like i dont have a choice anymore. :arghh:

I am planning on retaking A&P I during the summer, hoping that it will make a difference and other schools will accept me. I wanted to either transfer to Stony Brook or Hunter as a undergrad for spring 2015 and finish prerequisites at that school and then apply to their nursing program. I not sure what to do anymore. Seems like there's no hope of me becoming a nurse since i screwed up.

Please feel free to leave any advices!

Hello! Check with the programs you are going to apply to before repeating the course. Some colleges frown upon a repeat and may or may not allow it. If that is the case, its better to just accept the C and get and A from now on. Each program is different in how they view a repeat. Good luck!

Oh, i just noticed you said you got a C- So if they dont accept a C-, you will need to repeat it. Always best to check with each program.

Hunter is extremely strict about their requirements, and I don't think they allow any retakes. Definitely ask before you transfer!

I'm going to be direct not to be mean but because I want you succeed.

Stop with the pity party. That's not going to help you.

You must determine the cause of your academic difficulty and fix it. If you had problems with A&P you WILL have problems with nursing science courses. Also I know Hunter and Stonybrook. They are hard core schools when comes to the sciences. Again, if you had problems with science classes at a community college you WILL not succeed at these two schools. The professors in the science department will not hold your hand or spoon feed you the information.

This is not say your dreams of becoming a nurse are over. Quite the contrary. But you must do some deep reflection on your strengths and weakness to find a path that works best for you.

I'm in the same boat. Just keep pushing.

Hi,

I was in the same situation as you only for me it was Chemistry and the school that I was in did not accept repeats. There are MANY other schools that will accept your repeated grade. Just keep trying and DO YOUR RESEARCH when it comes to these schools. Also try schools in New Jersey. I got accepted into one for the Fall. Good Luck!!!

thanks! i am researching for other schools that will take me with my current situation

Yes, hunter doesnt allow any repeats or any pre reqs below a B i think

I'm going to be very honest with you. Nursing is extremely hard, so as someone else mentioned, you must evaluate why you got that C- in A&P (are you studying enough, do you understand the concepts, are you able to devote enough time to your studies?). I say this because once you do get into a nursing program, it is MUCH MORE difficult than just an A&P course. A&P is only a small part of the vast amount of knowledge you have to acquire while in nursing school. With that said, getting into a community college (especially CUNY) is impossible with a C in any of the core requirements. All is not lost though. There are many private schools that look at factors other than your GPA (Cochran and Montefiore SON are just 2 examples). However, you will have to get a C or better for any program, so you will have to retake the course. My suggestion would be to retake the course and really grind it out for the semester, devote as much free time as possible to studying (A&P is mostly a matter of memorization). Good luck and if you really want to be a nurse, stick with it. Aim for a C or better (preferably better) and you can still apply for nursing programs at private schools.

Currently at Montefiore School of Nursing (heading to Nursing 4); you need at least a C+ in all pre to apply. Not sure if they accept repeats. Call them to find out. If you are willing to travel to NJ, look into St. Peters College in Jersey City, also check Dominican College in Nyack..it does not hurt to try. Don't give up. Good luck.
