Help dosage

Hello nurses/ future nurses I need a little help. I have a test tomorrow in dosages and I'm stuck with this problem

Order: Tranduate 150mg p.o. B.i.d.

supply: tranudate 300 mg tablets

How many should I give per dose?

I know bid means twice a day so do I multiply 150 by 2 then divide by 300 and get 1 tab per dose. Or do I ignore the bid and just divide 150/350 and get .5?

Bid is the frequency. So you are giving 150 MG twice a day. How much do you give per dose if each tablet is 300 MG

Well, 1 tab is 300 mg, so that's out. ;)

Tabs are 300 mg; ordered dose is 150 mg. Ordered dose is half of supplied dose, right? So you'll give 1/2 a tab each dose. (In real life practice, you'll want to confirm that the pill can be cut in half.)

Op look at it as what you have (on hand) and what you need. If you need to give 150 mg twice a day, then how do you get that from what you have? By making the 300mg into a 150 mg--halfing the tab. AS LONG AS you are able to do so. Which you can look up in your drug book to be sure. What happens if it is a do not crush/halve? Then you need to check with pharmacy to see what other doses are available to you and then call the MD for a clarification with the information you have gathered (

Remember, what you have versus what you need.

Best wishes!

Okay so here's another one I did. Order of duricef 1g p.o. qid a.c. And supply duricef 500 mg capsules. So I convert 1 g to 1000mg then divide with 500mg I'd give 2 capsules? Am I correct?

This is correct!! WOO HOO!! What you have (500mg) and what you need (1000mg) And to be that nerdy again, is 4000 mg per day a safe dose? And a.c. before meals...your patient is eating 4 times a day? Clarify "meals" or "with food" or whatever the directions the MD wants (no milk products within "x" amount of hours?)

I have to say that this order is a little sketchy--so always use the "clarify a.c." (which may or may not be one of those orders that may be on a facility's "do not use" list. If nothing else, gets those critical thinking creative juices flowing!!

And finally, go to bed. I am amazed at you kids and how you are up all night doing homework--take care of you, too!! :)

And kudos for actually working the problems and asking for validation, rather than just asking for the answers.
