Fort Worth??

  • Experts

I am a 24 year-old California LVN student with a nearing graduation date of October 2005. I am planning to move to Texas immediately upon graduating and first considered El Paso; however, I'm not bilingual and that area has a high demand for Spanish-speaking nurses. I then looked at Houston, but realized I am fearful of the snakes and humid weather.

Now I'm seriously considering Fort Worth because the many of the houses are in my price range and the heat is dry (not humid or muggy). I would like to know a few things.

1. How's the job market and pay for LVNs?

2. Where are the safe, desirable neighborhoods?

3. I plan to eventually continue my education and bridge from LVN-to-RN. Could I do that in Ft. Worth/Dallas?

4. Are the snakes really active in Ft. Worth? :crying2:

I'd like to extend my warmest thank-yous in advance to any responders of this thread. I am highly appreciative of any knowledge, help, warnings, and tips/pointers. Thanks again! :)

I don't live in Texas, but I have lots of family there and we go to Fort Worth a couple of times a year. I love Fort Worth, and prefer it to Dallas. I don't know anything about housing, job market, and I'm not sure that it isn't humid--sure seems humid to me sometimes--but I like the overall atmosphere and think it's a beautiful city. Lots to do, big-time Western flavor. Has one of the best revived downtown areas I've seen; the Bass Hall is a phenomenal performance theater.

I have lived in fort worth 22 years and have yet to see a snake that wasn't at a lake at night. Southwest Fort Worth has always been fairly nice. Good Luck!

Hello.... Sw Ft Worth is great lots of good neighborhoods and hospitals. I dont like Dallas just to congested and big for me. As far as the pay it depends on where you want to work. The hospitals pay less for LVN's ,I work in SW Ft Worth (in geriatrics) and make over 21/hr. I dont think I have seen a snake here in about 20 years and I live out in the country . I have had oppossums in my house ,but never snakes...Good Luck and Welcome to Texas!!!!

Thanks for the help, guys and gals! The decision-making process has become slightly easier.

Now I know where to house-hunt this coming Saturday.

Hi Commuter,

I moved to FW 1 1/2 years ago and it is pretty nice. It was a difficult adjustment at first because I am a "left coaster", but I can now say that it is a good place to live. I live in Saginaw which is North FW and it is very nice if you like nice, uncrowded suburbia. I have seen 2 dead snakes in the road, but we are in a development that is being built from former cow pastures so I am sure that is why. Good luck house hunting.

On September 10th I caught a flight to DFW and looked with a Realtor for homes in the Ft. Worth area. I looked at the Fossil Creek area, the Saginaw area, Watauga, White Settlement, and South Ft. Worth (just north of the Crowley area by Hulen Mall). The neighborhoods all seemed quite nice, comfortable, and livable.

I liked the Fossil Creek area (though most of the homes are outside my price range) and the new homes in the vicinity of the Hulen Mall (South Ft. Worth or SW Fort Worth, I presume).

I have a few more questions....

1. Is the area around the Hulen Mall considered SW Ft. Worth?

2. How's the traffic on the local freeway system?

3. Is anyone familiar with the White Settlement area?

Thanks to those who have amazingly taken the time and patience to answer my questions.

Check out Benbrook - I LOVED it out there!!!
In what part of town is Benbrook located?

Keller is awesome, too! Ft. Worth area is very nice. In regards to El Paso, I think you might be pleasantly surprised (assuming it is still a consideration). When we lived there, no place would let a nurse walk out of the building while applying for a joab and not interview the person. Also, the military is moving a bunch of troops there which will probably result in decent housing appreciation. Spanish is helpful, but I don't speak a lick of it and never had trouble working. The Westside (around Redd Rd.) is great for English-speaking only people.

Benbrook is just west of Hulen - there is a lake there with nice parks, nice schools and some older affordable homes and newer more expensive ones. It was pretty quiet out there when I lived there. It has probably grown some I imagine, but I have friends who are still there and they still love it.

Thanks. I am still taking all affordable areas into consideration.
