Hello Community,
Well, I guess the title sums it up what my thread is going to be about. I was just fired from my job as a CNA. I am also currently in Nursing school. I only work part-time at this hospital. I have been there for about 2 years. The reason why my manager fired me was because I called off sick to much. I had a valid reason, but nothing could save me since I was only part-time. I don't know my true feeling about this job. I really didn't like it! I did really enjoy the patient care. The patient was the only thing I enjoyed about working here. Also, the some of the Nurses were great!! I don't know!! I guess I feel a little numb about the whole situation. I have six kids at home to support. I took this job to give me the experience I need to get into the Nursing field. I don't have a husband, so I really have to depend on myself to get ahead. I am so numb right now!!

This is not a plus mark for your future job opportunities as a nurse. I hope you are able to effectively deal with the root cause of your absences so that this does not become a pattern that hinders your future employment.

I am so sorry! You need to understand that calling off too much for whatever reason it may be (especially being a PT employee) will portray you as being unreliable. I know times are tough but unless those root issues are solved, your next employer will not tolerate it as well.
Wishing you and your family a brighter future and the best of luck. Not judging you at all........I am a single momma myself.

Sorry about what happened to you, cjveronica. Single mom, 6 kids, nursing school-- sounds almost impossibly stressful. The whole thing may have been inevitable, but employers, knowing how many people are looking for work, hesitate for far less time in firing people. All of us face that risk. I hope you can focus on your health now. Nothing else can happen without that. Best wishes to you. :)
I was hospitalized twice last and once this year. I am a older woman and my illness creep up on me. I let my employer know in a timely matter. I hope this doesn't effect my opportunity of becoming a Nurse. I have work hard to get where I am at.

This will be a continuing problem in your career and you need to get it under control in whatever way you can.
You chose to have 6 children and they are not an excuse for excessive calling in. Just because you have a large family does not mean you get to call in more than what is policy.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Maybe down the road you'll see this as a blessing in disguise? Focus on your schooling. Look for a job elsewhere. Quite frankily, I was sick of nursing when I wasn't in school so having a non-nursing job was a blessing. It allows you to clear your head.

How many times did you call in sick within that 2 year period? How close together were those times?

No where in her post does she state that she called on because she has 6 children. If you had taken the time to read further, she was hospitalized 3 times in two years. I truly wish that before someone responded to a post they made sure they had all the facts, and not jump to conclusions, as is evident with the post above.
I believe she mentioned the 6 children out of fear of not having a job to support them, and is not using them as an excuse to call of from work.
Please walk a mile in others shoes before you judge....
I wish you well....this too shall pass, keep your head up and keep going after your degree!

My most sincere condolences. Take care of yourself, and remember this too shall pass.
Oh, and congrats on your six kids. I always wanted a bunch. I tell my daughter she's all twelve of my childen.
DayOhioRn,
Thank you for that post. You are right by saying that I was in the hospital 3 times this past year. I was also again on Jan 4th. The doctor said it might be cancer. I really have been a great employee. I didn't know that it was going to end like this, but what makes it more diffcult is that I had no FMLA or any leave time saved up because of my part-time status. I really am scared to death. My mother just died of cervical cancer. I thought I would be able to post this message without any attacks. I will work hard to be strong!!
