Extreme swelling and tenderness of lymph node

I wanted to ask what might cause extreme swelling and tenderness unilaterally in the submandibular lymph node? My left lymph node is so swollen you can almost see it just through inspection. It's also fairly tender and I have also have pain when talking that originates at the base of my tongue (almost where my tonsils are at). It happened overnight and I'm to the point where I'm not sure if I should go the the ED. I tried looking in my mouth to the spot where the pain was on my tongue and it almost looks as though there is a chancre or some sort of lesion there. But I'm not sure because of how far back it is, I had a hard time moving my tongue out of the way. Could that be causing the severe swelling in the lymph? And should I be worried enough to go to the ED?

I have also had a fever since last Tuesday that has gone up and down, but usually stays around 99-100. And last week, I had incredible joint soreness, but I attributed that to the 102 fever I had on Wednesday. My throat has also been extremely sore to the point I went to the doctor yesterday for a strep test. That came back negative and unfortunately, my lymph node was not in this condition nor did I have the pain on the posterior of my tongue when I was at the physicians.

If we're voting, mine's with mono also.

Hey....

I have the same exact flipping thing right now...you have described it to a T........it's only on the right side.....it's like my right tonsil and or right side of the back of my tongue. It hurts a lot more when I swallow...but again..it's only on the right side. It almost feels like my tongue is swollen on that side because it's like my teeth are rubbing the side of my tongue. It also hurts under my ear and up under my chin. It hurts and is annoying to say the least....if you find out more info..please let me know. I know I have a cavity on that back molar on that side and am waiting to get it fixed...but that tooth doesn't hurt...it seems more like a lymph problem.....take care and I hope you are feeling better soon....

:kiss

I've seen 2 this week that were admitted. Diagnosis: peritonsilar abcess with mono.

I vote mono also.

My baby was three months old and my son had just had his second birthday. I had the same S&S for quite a few days and then BOOM - I woke up one morning and was so weak I couldn't lift my head off of the pillow! Not kidding here. It was that bad! Luckily this was a Friday morning and my DH is off on Friday, Saturday, Sunday - he works out of town so the timing was perfect. Went to the hospital and my liver was HUGE. Doc asked if I was a drinker. I told him that between trying to get pregnant, being pregnant, and breast feeding, I hadn't had anything with alcohol in it in three and a half years. Mono was positive. The only treatment - plenty of rest and drink lots and lots and lots of water! Doc told me that the quickest way to get rid of it is flush it out of the kidneys. Don't think I have ever drank that much water in my life.

Diagnosed Friday morning and better on Monday morning. Why? I had NO CHOICE - dh had to leave for long drive to work at 4 a.m. and wouldn't be back until Thursday night. Drink water until you FLOAT (if it is mono) - it worked for me.

My family doc told me that if you are run down (I hadn't slept more than an hour a day for at least four months - not because of kids, because of family member going through a severe depression) you can pick up mono by touching a shopping cart or just breathing in an area that someone else was in twenty minutes before you. Mono is normally difficult to catch if you are perfectly healthy - but when you are rundown and stressed to the max, your immune system is unable to do anything about it.

Hope you feel much better soon.

I hope you have gone back to your doctor and I hope you don't have anything too bad.

Could it be an infection back there in your throat? Like you cut it with some food?

I wanted to say that I suffered from Mono during my Junior year of college. I have no idea how I contracted it except that I let myself get really run down and spent a lot of time outdoors in inclement weather.

When it first started, I only presented with slightly swollen lymphs of my neck and a sore throat and malaise/tiredness. I went to the doctor who told me that it couldn't be Mono because my lymphs around my neck, not my jaw were swollen. Whatever that means! He gave me some antibiotics.

Two days later (after sleeping for 15 hours straight) I woke up and my glands around my neck and jaw were so swollen you could see them bulging. My throat was significantly more swollen and when I looked into the back of my throat the whole thing was white/black/gray in color and swollen.

I ran to the campus health center and got a blood test, came back positive for mono. My doctor put me on Steroids and I was back to my good old self 10 days later.

I really hope you don't have something like mono, but if you do, ask your doctor if he can give you some meds. to decrease the symptoms of mono. The steroids that my doctor gave me did wonders, my throat was back to normal in a few days and I didn't have the extreme fatigue that you get with mono. Also, I hadn't had an appetite up to taking the steroids but once on them, my appetite increased greatly so I was eating a lot and getting myself healthy.

I vote for making a doctor's appointment.....

hope your doing well...let us know if you made it to the dr. I hope it's not mono!

BTW...I'm sitting here ignoring my own symptoms that popped up this morning!

Just today I began feeling these sharp shooting pains in my left ear, my left side of my head and my left node in my neck. Hurts to touch it. Hurts to swallow and when i say shooting pain in my head it's like a punch in the head. Is it some new flu? Was it mono for all those who went to the doc recently?

I've been suspecting mono for the past day. The funny thing is, the left lymph node subsides in swelling a few hours after waking up. And it's not from drainage because I don't sleep on either side all night long..I'm back and forth. I can barely palpate it now, but I can almost promise that in the morning, the pain in the back of my tongue and the swelling will be back. And the worst part that leads me to think something like mono? The tiredness I feel. I am getting winded walking up stairs, carrying a few books, etc. That's not my normal self. UGH...I don't have time for this with school, holidays, family, etc. :o :( :o :(

I sent you a pm

Doctor's appointment!!!

Then,

ginger ale/7-up

chicken soup

vitamins

rest for body--brain can still study....

Take care of yourself! You (and your posts) mean too much to us to lose you!!!

LOL--and hugs

WHAT!!! You have not been to the doc yet? Get thee to thy physician, girlie girl...Or you will miss lots of school and be sick and miserable through the holidays and your family will suffer too...This won't resolve on it's own....You are real nurse material-most of us wait until we are half dead before seeking medical attention.. Be well....
