I'll have to remember this one!!

I had a co-worker that called in 3 times in about 6 months because her MIL died. The third time she was called on it. She had to admit she lied.

That was awesome! Cereal up the nose but worth it!

One called in and told me she couldn't come to work because she was having a seizure.

"You had a seizure?"

"Yes, I'm having a seizure."

"Right now? As we speak?"

"Yeah."

Had a hubby call in for one of our nurses because "she just didn't feel like getting up"... this person had a habit of calling in late, and when I told him (again) that call-ins were to be made before 5 am, he asked, "Well, what time IS it?"

"Five minutes before her shift starts!" :angryfire

Another nurse had called in one night because of El Niño.

I didn't ask...

The other day I went to a local store at 3 in the afternoon and saw an aide that works at our facility.....well when I got to work I saw that she had called in for the 2 - 10 shift with a gas leak in her house....so I guess she was at the store getting "fresh air" in the CD department!!

I woke up to get ready for work one afternoon feeling SO sick and disoriented. The CO detectors were blaring, and all I could think of was trying to make the noise stop, my head hurt so bad. I called a local fire station and asked them how to turn them off... they got all excited, "what's your address, we'll be right there!"

"No, no, no. I have to go to work. Just tell me how to make it stop. I have a headache."

They said they couldn't explain it over the phone, they'd have to show me. Well, here comes the big red truck and they MADE me leave the house, wouldn't let me back in ("I gotta get ready for work!!") and told me I had to go to the hospital. The fireman asked me a list of questions about symptoms, all of which I denied (yes, I lied...I was a little bit confused and a whole lot irritable, to say the least).

As I was lying in the ER getting O2 by NRB mask and finally beginning to realize how sick I really felt, my supervisor came in, took one look at me and told me she had scrubs for me to put on so I could get to work.

She wasn't kidding, either. Her rationale was that the cure for CO poisoning was to get the person out of the environment, and I was out of the environment.

*sigh*

At my last job I had an RN call in because her husband was driving her to the hospital as she had mistook the superglue for her eyedrops and superglued both her eyes shut. (personally, I would have realized with the first one, but this gal marched to the beat of a different drummer, most likely the toy monkey beating the snare drum).

I wonder how often this happens. The containers do look a lot alike, and I knew someone who did the same thing. (one eye only, lol). Poor thing had no eyelashes for months.

I once had a co-worker call in because she had her hair dyed, but it was the absolute wrong color... (gasp)... so she was going to another salon to have it fixed.

When I was a hairstylist, I asked my client, who happened to be a nurse, if her friends at work had any opinions about her going so blonde. She said, "Oh, they don't know, I called in and said I was sick so I could come to the salon today." Then she went pale. It apparently just then occurred to her that there would be no way she could hide the fact that she was obviously NOT at home sick in bed. Her hair was 6 shades lighter and 8 inches shorter.

One stylist was chronically "sick" (read:hungover) on Saturdays. One such day I was taking care of one of his scheduled clients. She was a little miffed about being rescheduled, and she told me this wasn't the first time he'd missed her appointment. Always on a Saturday. I attempted to sympathize, I said I was sorry, he did seem to be sick pretty frequently on Saturdays. As deadpan as can be she says "Wow, poor thing, he must have a really bad immune system on the weekends."

I called in once about 15 minutes before I was leaving for work. I was suddenly struck with lower abdominal pain. I hated to call off but I could barely stand up. The supervisor said "I better see you in the ER tonight" as if she didn't believe me. That was back when I worked 3-11. It was around 2:00. I went to my doctor who admitted me to the hospital, I was promptly seen by a surgeon who took me to surgery. I had a ruptured diverticuli. The super came around later and profusely apoloigized for not believing me.
