I have been hired in the OR to scrub because of my previous surgical tech experience I am a new graduate RN. I was loving my assignments because they kept me busy but recently I have been put into a room where I sit there most of the time. I am a really good scrub and have not had any problems with any staff members up to this point. Am I allowed to find assignments that I like or does it matter do I have to work in the boring room because there shortstaffed or do I have a choice?

I don't understand? You sit in a room??? Watching scrub techs and circulators work a case? You get stuck with the boring cases but you are functioning, working, as a scrub tech? What kind of cases are these.
At my place there certainly are cases some tech's and RN's do not like to do. Unfortunately we do not yet have a system in place where everyone has to, gets to, do certain cases. Sometimes the surgeons "prefer" or ask for certain RN's, techs, so of course (being sarcastic) they get to call the shots!
All I can say is keep a daily log of what cases you do for several days or several weeks. Have these facts with you, make an appointment with your charge nurse, show her that you are getting the majority of these less exciting...(or whatever word you can think of?) cases and want to be exposed to all the cases so you don't lose your skills?

I guess my main question is were you hired on as a circulating nurse and just happen to be a scrubbed in nurse or were you hired as a surgical tech? As a graduate nurse, are you in a residency or internship right now?

A well-rounded employee takes his/her turn at all cases- including the boring ones. I'm sure that in the future you will find yourself rotating back into the cases you prefer. To me, this isn't really a battle worth fighting- you could end up getting yourself labeled as a problem employee (and yes, I do agree with the other poster who mentioned entitlement).
I definitely don't want to be a problem employee I will take my turn at it. It would just really help me to keep my head up if I knew that this was just a rotation and there would be an end to it.

Sounds like a question for your management/board runner, not us. We have no way of knowing what the practices of your specific OR are.

Do you have an educator or someone like that that you can talk to? How long have you been there? Perhaps they want you to watch and learn and then go from there? I am surprised you are told to sit though, instead of watching and learning so you can do it (show one, do one, teach one).
If I was in your situation, I would speak to my manager/new grad educator, and ask them if they feel you are ready for some more challenging work. Say you want to be challenged, double-scrub (scrub with someone to learn). Otherwise, I would jump on in there. Ask the scout or someone if you can help them, tell them to order you around! If they are the friendly ones that like to teach ask them to teach you!
