Does cold calling really work?

Generally speaking I never really like the idea of calling businesses to find out if they're hiring. A lot of the people who answer the phone act as if you're bothering them with that kind of question, you unworthy unemployed peasant. But there are so many nursing homes within 20 mins of where I live and it would be a real luxury to work that close to home. I'm wondering if I were to call and ask to speak to the human resources department would this be a worthwhile investment of time, or do HR depts at nursing homes get annoyed if you cold call them as well?

When I hit the sidewalk I carry a folder containing the following, or they are in my purse: picture ID (driver's license), social security card, nursing license, CPR cards (BLS,

ACLS, PALS), a copy of the generic employment physical exam form that I have my doctor fill out once a year when I get my employment physical; the certfication for the PPD is on the bottom of the form I use, copy of my malpractice insurance face sheet (for those employers that require it), copy of my car insurance, copies of letters of reference, copy of my work history, list of references and contact info, copies of my resume. All of these usually do the trick. HTH

Yes, that is how I got my first (and present) job!

well everytime i see a hiring add, there is always the number, well most of the time. so when it is there i dont hesitate to call. i live 40 mins from the city, so i HAVE to call at times. most of the time i just ask if they are hiring and for what shift. if it's what i like then i can make the trip to apply, or if they have and email then i would just send my resume, let them set up an interview and THEN fill out an app lol. i'm glad though i havent had to look for a job for a little while!

Once again, cold calling does work- why waste time and gas if you do not know if there are any openings or shifts that will fit your schedule. I never go into anything blind...do your research first! I checked out my facility first before I even called them because I refuse to work at a place with poor standards! Poor standards mean high turnover but I would not want to get a job where I will not last 2 weeks! I work at a facility with decent standards some CNA's have been there for years... the residents are treated well and the employees are treated well, a good combination in my book!

I made the call and found out they had an opening and set up an interview...why work hard when you can work smart! Make list of facilities in your area, research their ratings and start dialing the top choices.
