Patients and the race card
actually, the poster was trying to convey that even though she was once treated in that manner, that she does not go around expecting to be treated badly by everyone she meets...she was not pointing you are anyone else out...just stating her facts. you are only held accountable for your actions today...

Patients and the race card
Exactly, most people don't really know racism until they have been on the receiving end of it...so that makes it easy for other people who haven't experienced it to the same degree to naturally assume that the aggrieved person is imagining things or being overly sensitive...

Patients and the race card
Edited to add my original thought, which I couldn't seem to get together in my head when I posted: When you assume that "others" have or will treat you differently because of your race, you are being .... racist. Sorry. But it's no better than what you accuse "everyone else" of being. What if it is not an assumption but truth, even though it is a hard "truth" to prove because often times racism is not blatant but "you" know it is occurring when it happens to you...most people don't go out looking for discrimination incidents but when they occur they know...

Patients and the race card
No it is not a "nursing utopia" as we do not live in an utopia world at all...the bottom line is to act professional at all times and treat everyone as you would like to be treated...whatever your feelings may be on the subject, you have to leave them at home where they belong...and that is valid in any profession...Not "PC madness" but actual good old fashion home training.

Patients and the race card
OP: Some of the comments have stated what to say in a professional manner and I agree with them! Take this to heart: In my world there is no such thing as "the race card"... I take each person as an individual and treat each incident separately. I do not lump people together, especially not over one or two incidents and say "oh well, that's how they all are!" For example, would you want to be held accountable for what another nurse does, or are you an individual who happens to be a nurse and want be held accountable for your own actions. This is the same with the people you meet, work with, or take care of...What I am trying to say is basically this... you will have some co-workers who will want you to be on their side and think like them, realize as an individual you are not obligated to be on their side...you are there to give the best possible care that is in your power, anything else has nothing to do with you. Remember ignorance comes in all colors, shapes and sizes and people say ugly things out of fear of the unknown or they just don't know any better... I have been called the N-word by elderly whites and that did not deter me from doing my job...they still received the same care as everyone else... Bottom line, as a nurse you will need to grow a thick skin because you are dealing with the public as well as cranky co-workers and demeaning doctors...you will also meet people who will make your day with just a smile - it all evens out in the end...So hang in there... You can do it!

May Not Be able to start school due to lack of funds
Thanks, I am still working on getting the money together, I decided to keep on trying until I exhaust every option... I was really down in the dumps when I wrote the first entry, but I see that I am surrounded by kindred spirits and that helped to lift me up!

May Not Be able to start school due to lack of funds
The total cost is between 6000 - 7000 dollars and it was a surprise to me as well when I was told that they only take grants. I didn't apply for a private loan because I didn't think I would qualify for a decent rate and do not want to get further in debt due to high rates that can occur with private loans. Thank you for your response...

May Not Be able to start school due to lack of funds
I have applied for the WIA program but it is a lengthy process and the funds are not guaranteed to be available in time for my deadline. If nothing pans out before my deadline, I am going to see if they will allow me to secure a spot for the next class start date. Thank you for your response!

May Not Be able to start school due to lack of funds
I am supposed to start my LPN program in October. After a long wait, I was finally accepted to fill a spot that opens up in October. At first I was very excited but then I quickly came to my senses as soon as I was told that the school does not accept loans and I know for a fact that I will get very little money from a Pell grant. I have been applying for scholarships and trying to find creative ways to come up with the very large downpayment, but so far nothing... the deadline for me to have the money is quickly coming and I am becoming more and more despondent. It looks like I will have to delay my dreams once again and I am not getting any younger. If I had been told upfront that the school does not accept Financial Aid in the form of loans then I could have been more prepared as they want a tremendous amount of money upfront... just needed to vent.

Largest Nurses Strike in US History - Replacement Nurses Arrive - Your opinion
That is why I have stop reading the comment sections of most online news articles. The negative people always put their two cents in - like it helps! I take solace in the fact that most of the commentators are ignorant on the subject and that they are just too stupid to know the difference between their opinions and real facts.

Why cant people be happy for you!
I am also happy for you! :) Sometimes we have to be our own cheerleaders because there are people in our lives that want to see us fail or maybe are just so wrapped up in their own lives that they can't take two seconds of their time to concentrate on anyone else. That is why this forum exists! We are support for each other. So we are all rooting for you!
