Do you ever feel like a licensed drug pusher?

Do you ever feel like you're a licensed narcotics pusher/IV starter for seekers? :(

Run a search on your terms ... you'll get plenty of answers.

Pusher? How insane...?

I don't administer anything that hasn't been ordered by a doctor and I don't force anyone to take a medication they don't want.

(...well, except the crazies. They WILL get haldol, ativan, or geodon if they don't play well with others)

Yes, in the ER, sometimes it feels just wrong to give some people drugs, while you have other people they wont order anything for. It's not my job to judge how much pain anybody is in or isn't in, but sometimes it feels backwards.

uh.... no I don't

I work on a very busy med tele floor with a lot of frequent fliers, so yes I do feel like that. As long as their VS are stable and they're awake and A&O x 4, I just give them what they want.

While I don't feel like a licensed drug pusher, I do sometimes feel that all I do is run around throwing rx at people.

I do.

However, I don't make judgments on other people's pain.

For me, if they have an order and it's safe to give, I give it. It's not up to me to decide if they are seeking or not. The drug and the amount is between the patient and the physician. When the patient is unhappy with his pain medication, I simply page the physician and let them know.

But I DO feel like a pusher - can't help it. Sorry to those nurses who NEVER feel this way... Maybe it depends on what kind of floor you are on. You know what they say... walk a mile in my shoes...

This, exactly.

For many years now, I have referred to myself as "The Candy Man".

Administering ordered narcotics has Nothing to do with judging if a client is a drug seeker.

If they are ordered, I give them. if they're not, and I feel they are necessary, I will fight till the end to get the patient relief.

We are a society of quick, easy, and pain free.

Unless we're talking about the nurse.

Yeah, I guess I kinda am a licensed drug pusher.....hmmmm
