Hello, could someone please tell me what is the difference between the atkins diet and the south beach diet. I have already looked at the websites but it is still not clear to me. Also does anyone suggest one over the other or have ANY comments about either? Also I am a red meat vegitarian, and I don't eat eggs either.

Uhhhh......what's a "red meat vegetarian"?
My understanding of the major differences between the two diets is, the SB diet allows more fruits, veggies and other complex carbs than Atkins. I've done Atkins several times over the 30 years it's been around, and it's VERY low-carb (you start out by cutting back to 20g or less of CHO per day, then work back up to a max of 60g/day). Frankly, I think the SB diet is healthier AND easier to stick with, since it includes more food groups than Atkins (you don't get bored as easily). Neither diet permits white starches or refined sugars, and I think the SB diet is lower in fat than Atkins.

Normally when I tell poeple I am a vegitarian and tell them I eat chichen, they say "Well then you are not a real vegitarian" I get that a alot. So I just was trying to specify that I basically don't eat red meat. That's all.

I bought the "South Beach Diet" book weeks ago with plans to follow it to lose weight and changed my mind. Call me fickle...no particular reason...just didn't do the diet.
I really couldn't see myself eating three square meals a day with small snacks in between, etc. I rarely eat one meal a day which is why my system is all confused, and doesn't know it's okay to NOT gain weight the times I don't eat.
Trouble is.......NOT eating will cause you to gain weight also. YEP! Confirmed by a nutritionist and my doc. They want me to eat six meals a day to lose weight. Well, the thought of eating all that food makes me nauseas.
I get up in the morning on my days off, and don't eat until near supper time. Why???? I think it goes back to my childhood when we conditioned ourselves to NOT be hungry, and eat when the food was in the house. So for my entire adulthood thus far, food has never been on the top of my list.
I was able to stay trim all my life until I hit my mid-forties, then BOOM! Guess my body started picking up the message all those past years of my not feeding it, and began to hold on to anything that I swallowed that would be stored as "reserve fat" in case my body needed it in a crisis.
KNOWING all this to be true, I still can't psyche myself into eating food when my stomach and my mind says "I'm not ready to eat yet." And no, I don't even feel hunger pains until after two in the afternoon, but still won't stop and feed myself until I'm ready to pass out. Sad, I know. I'm damaged goods from childhood, and need "reconditioned" I suppose.
On the days that I work, my only meal is lunch. I'm way too tired to think about food after work, so shower and to bed are all I have strength for.
Perhaps I should write Dr. Phil about my "mental issues" that interfere with me feeding my body when it is NOT feeling hungry.
As for meat: I eat all meat except very very little pork because pork upsets my stomach for some odd reason.
Maybe the psych nurses on board here at allnurses can help me with my "mental-pause".

You get that a lot because a person that eats meat is not a vegetarian. You just don't eat red meat.
Sorry, its way too early in the a.m. for me to have kept quiet.

Semi-Vegitarian: Some but not all groups of animal derrived products such as meat, poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, milk and milk products are included in this diet.
Lactovegetarian: Milk and milk products included in this diet, but meat, pultry, fish, seafood and eggs excluded.
Lacto-Ovovegetarian: Milk and milk products and eggs are included in this diet, but meat, pultry, fish and seafood excluded.
Ovovegetarian: Eggs included in this diet, but milk and milk products, meat, pultry, fish and seafood excluded.
Strict-Vegetarian/Vegan: All animal derived foods, including meat, poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, milk and milk products are excluded from this diet.
So...I would assume you are a semi-vegetarian. I'm a lacto-ovovegetarian since I eat eggs.
Sorry, just wanted to clear things up!

Why does everyone desire the title of vegetarian? Who really cares? I'm a C-fooderian. I eat anything I C.

There are omnivors, carnivors, vegitarians, and vegans.
If you don't eat red meat then say you don't eat red meat. Calling it something else is confusing and not communicating.
I could not tell for sure if you meant you did not eat red meat or your ate red meat to the exclusion of all other meats.
My suggestion read both the Atkins book (the original one) and the South Beach book. They are both short and inexpensive books.
If you are a meat eater with leanings toward vegitarian say this. But then be prepared to answer the questions that will follow. Lableing things that are vague does not add clarity only serves to mislead or confuse.
It would be very clear if you said the only meat I eat is chicken. Or I consider myself vegitarian however I do eat chicken. This is what you did in your explaination. So use your explaination as your discriptor not some undefiend lable.
GEE SORRY IF I OFFENDED EVERYONE!!!!! ALL I MEANT IS THAT THE ONE AND ONLY THING I EAT THAT A VEGITARIAN DOESN'T IS CHICKEN AND ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE, NO EGGS OR FISH OR ANYTHING. I HAVE BEEN THIS WAY SINCE 6TH GRADE AND WHEN I WENT TO MY DOCTOR TO SEE IF I SHOULD BE TAKING ANY SPECIFIC SUPPLEMENTS AND HE SAID THAT I WASN'T A STRICT VEGITARIAN BUT WAS INDEED A SEMI VEGITARIAN. AND NO I DON'T DESIRE TO BE VEGITARIAN OR THINK IT'S COOL, I DON'T EVEN TELL PEOPLE I AM, I ONLY DID TO GET THE POINT ACROSS OF WHAT I EAT TO SEE WHICH DIET WOULD BE BETTER FOR ME! THIS POST WASN'T ASKING YOU ALL YOUR ADVICE ON WETHER I'M A VEGITARIAN OR NOT!!!!
IT IS SO RUDE WHEN SOMEONE GETS ON HERE TO ASK A SIMPLE QUESTION AND END UP GETTING ATTACKED AND TALKED TO LIKE I AM A DUMBA##!!! I AM FULLY AWARE OF WHAT I AM AND REALLY DON'T NEED YOUR OPINION ON THAT!
BUT THANKS FOR THE ONE OR TWO POEPLE WHO ACTUALLY ANSWERED MY QUESTION AND DIDN'T TRY TO PUT ME DOWN TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES LIKE THEY ARE SOOOOOO MUCH MORE AWARE OF VEGITARIANISM THAN ME AND SOOO MUCH SMARTER! :(
AND LAST I DID NOT MEAN BY RED MEAT VEGITARIAN, TO BE A MEDICAL TERM, I FORGOT I WAS TALKING TO A BUNCH OF NURSES. I JUST WAS TRYING TO IN A EASY WAY SPECIFY MY EATING HABITS. IT WAS MEANT IN SLANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
