Did I do something wrong????

After asking my boss last schedule to place me on the schedule for 4 days a week, he actually placed me on for five. I immediately went to him and stated I could not work 5 12 hour shifts in a row, I did not want to get burn out.

So, he took my down to 4 days a week like I asked without complaint. Last week, a co-worker came to me and asked if she could take one of my days (today) because she had originally asked for today off, but decided to save her PTO. I agreed knowing I could work in the EC and pick up todays shift.

I had to go to my locker on the floor to get something, and my DON saw me. He got immediately mad, and stated I disrespected he because I didnt tell him I was picking up a shift in the EC.

What???????? I do not see that I did anything wrong, maybe someone might have a different outlook????

Are you supposed to clear any switches with him first? Or maybe he thinks you're still working 4 days but picking up a 5th day after asking him to take you off that

5th day? I bet it's the latter.

I'll bet that's it, too.

I also love how he (the DON) is the one talking about being disrespected. These people seem to feel that respect is owed to them just because. I try to treat everyone with respect, but I don't give it out to people who don't earn it. And this guy certainly didn't treat the OP with any respect.

I'll bet that's it also. And while he came to the wrong conclusion, I can understand why he is angry. OP, you owe your boss an explanation.

Here is a copy of the email I sent him after he called the EC director and accused her of trying to steal me away.

I love working ___, and because of your generosity I am able to work 4 days a week. (which I tremendously appreciate!) But to work 5 days a week on the same floor would cause me to have a major burn-out, which I do not want. ___ is my heart, my family.

I asked _____ to be my mentor because of her experience in the EC. I do have end goals in life, one being to maybe become a CRNA. (CC experience needed). I asked Kerri if they ever needed any help in the MCC. Before I contacted _____ this week for some OT, I did make sure that there was plenty of help scheduled in ___. (which on paper, there was)

I appoligize if you feel like I went over you, that was not my intention. Nor do I plan on leaving ____. I just need some OT, without becoming so burnt out. Being a single mom, going to school, and having my wounderful job take alot out of me, and I never want that to show in my work. I hope that you can understand and appreciate this.

It was not my intention to keep this a secret, it was just a miscommunication on my part of not realizing you didt know.

He simply replied that he wants to have a "serious meeting" with me regarding my disrespect.

I can understand what you are saying, but I never asked him for 5 days a week. I only needed 4 days a week, which after the schedule was fixed, was what it came out to.

No, what I mean is: he put you down for 5 days. You asked him to change it back to 4, the way you wanted it. He did. Then he finds out you're doing a day in another department. He may think that you asked him to take you off that 5th day to work elsewhere rather than where he wanted you. He doesn't realize you're still only doing 4 days, he thinks you picked up a 5th day.

You might check into what facility policy says about this. In one place I worked, you were not allowed to work OT in another unit or area without your head nurse's permission.

I think that your DON is overreacting. I think the matter is very petty. Where is the disrespect? The DON is now disrespecting you by making mountains out of mole hills. I guess there is one problem with nursing ----DRAMA.

I agree. My hospital has strict guidelines about people working in 2 departments. I'm surprised the other Manager has not discussed it with the OP's boss.

There are no rules/regs about working in different depts. we are so short handed, they welcome the diversity. There are 3 other people that I work with that also pick up shifts in the ED, I guess that is why I thought I didnt have to make sure he knew.

Now that I think about it, one of my co-workers has said in the past that the DON has made snide remarks about her working down there and not picking up OT on our floor.

The thing is, I do pick up ot on our floor. an extra day a week. Why would anyone want to work more than that on one floor? Expecially our floor. we are fast and have a high turnover rate. I think the longest a room has been open is because house cleaning took lunch before she cleaned a room!!!

I am not going to fret about it until I have to hear what he says. He is emotional anyway. He will fire someone over small stuff and make them beg for their job back. If he expects me to do that, he has another thing coming!

We had a co-worker, there for 3 months. She had to have emergency surgery and was out 3 weeks. He called her in while she was on medical leave and told her she needed to get better or get a new job, that as-matter-a-fact, they would end her employment that day and when she got better she could have her job back. He then asked her to make a case and he would hire her back. What bull &*^%.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I am just going to give it up to miscommunication and go from there.

What a jerk!!!!!
