Please tell me how "cysto" is handled in your facility.. Is one RN supposed to do cases, wash, and wrap instruments alone? Is this normal???!!!

We require an RN and a tech. I suppose the surgeon could scrub by himself during a cysto, but it's safer to have a tech in the room.

Scrub tech ,circ nurse.
Thank you for you replies....we get no scrub tech... the surgeons do the case , along with the residents, but the issue is set up and the constant turnover of the instruments, wash, wrap, etc. I find this hard especially when you have up to 6 cases, and you have to steris instruments with no scrub tech, and then at the end of the day you are responsible for the build up.....plus, I am really not trained to do the processing, am I, as nurse? and please dont take this the wrong way, but from a financial standpoint, isnt it a wAste of monry to have RN's washing and processing instruments? This seems not - kosher to me.. and this is at a major university hospital.....I just dont get it......

ST and RN, extra person to run laser if using, instruments/laser fibers processed by SPD but actual scopes sterised by room staff.

No scrub nurses are used for cysto's at my work, we have two scout nurses to open instruments for the surgeon and connect camera, light cables, irrigation etc. Used instruments then go to sterilizing department.
It is not uncommon for nurses or techs to clean cysto instruments. But they should expect long turnover times if this is the case.
Laser ? You get another person for that? wow
Yep, that's our policy. Those "qualified" to run laser must have done one observation and three supervised runs before going solo. Everyone has to do yearly safety education. Typically, if there's laser cases in more than one room not at the same time, the same person does them all. But having that extra person is nice because while we're doing a case, they can be getting the scopes ready for the next one.
We have a scrub and 2 RN's for lasers. One of the people have to be "trained" on the laser. laser goggles, windows covers, signs on doors, etc
