is this considered passing?

I took medsurg class twice w/c happened to be my last term in sch. the first time, I passed the clinical portion of it and failed the theory so I have to re-take both class again even though I passed the other because the theory and clinical goes hand and hand at yet graded separately. the second time around I passed the theory and failed the clinical.... that is so upsetting.

I would say no. You need to pass both portions at the same time.

The school I go to counts them seperate. If you pass clinical and fail theory then you only make up theory. We have to have a 76 to be considered passing though. Most schools in our area only have to have a 70. I guess it just depends on your school.

The same here. At the school I attended, they are seperate classes and if you fail one, thats the only one you have to retake. A 74% minimum is needed for passing.

I suppose each school differs. At my school, you have to retake BOTH and pass BOTH at the same time. Good for you for brushing yourself off and trying again. That's determination!

In my school, no it's not passing. If you can't pass both at the same time, you're failed. We also only had 2 chances so if you can't pass the second time you're out of the program permanently, no remediation, no extenuating circumstances, no excuses in any way. It sucked. What is your school policy?

That sucks :(

Obviously you should check with your school, but my guess is that if they counted them completely separately, they wouldn't have made you retake both. Since they did, I'm guessing that they require a student to pass them both in the same term.

My school counts both. I failed cliniclas once r/t illnesses and had to repeat the whole semester. You should be able to refer to your student handbook and/or discuss the issue with the director of your nursing program. Good luck, and kudos to your for keeping at it!

I'm very sorry to hear this. I was in my program last year and failed Theory and passed clinical. We also have to pass both together. I know you are upset but hopefully you can find something in the near future and make it work for you. Do not give up!! I wish the best of luck to you.

At my college, a minimum of 80% is needed for passing!

They are graded separately however I need to passed both at the same time.84 % is the cut off. I have to change school and start all over again because my nursing credits does not transfer to other school. Nursing schools are designed differently....:bluecry1:

At my school, theory is calculated first (74.5 to pass), then P/F on clinicals and lab. If you don't pass theory, clinicals and lab are not even considered, and you must retake the whole class. If you pass theory, a fail on clinical or lab is then considered, and you must retake the whole class. Two strikes, you're out.

From a cost-effectiveness perspective, I guess I'm not sure why your school made you repeat clinicals when you passed that portion of the course last time. It is harder to find a clinical spot for a student than it is to find a seat in a lecture hall, KWIM? I do understand that every school has its own policy; however, the programs with which I am most familiar have either had theory and clinical count as one course (though if a student fails either, he/she has to repeat the whole thing) or clinical and skills lab are separate from theory and if one fails any of the three components, he/she has to only repeat what was failed, not the entire course.

What do you think happened so that you didn't get through clinical this time? The reason I ask is not because you need to answer to me (or to anyone else) but because this might be something for you to keep in mind when you do get into the other school so that you can succeed and fulfill your goals.

IMHO, 84% is a pretty high standard; most programs with which I am familiar have had cut-off scores of about 70 to 76% for passing.
