Can my school force me to do extra tests after i graduated before they schedule my nclex??

My LVN school implemented a new rule that we have to take proctored tests at the school site before they pay and schedule my nclex, but i had already graduated from the school and even picked up my diploma because my tuition fees were also paid and up to date....can the school make me do this??? Nowhere in the contract was this listed and they put it into practice after i passed the exit exam the first try with a very high score.

No, they can't make you do this. However, if you want to sit for NCLEX, then you'll take the test. Why even fuss about it?

Because i live an hour away i work full-time, am a single mom of 2 under 12 and each test is 5hours every time so unless i can do them in my sleep there is no time and and the babysitting rate for non-work or school hours is rediculous because after all since i already graduated this is not covered under school activities

Is the school going to release your graduation information to the BON if you do not comply?

Maybe you can ask a lawyer if this is considered breach of contract? If so, how do the other grads feel about it, are they against it, are they willing to sign a petition?

@mims84, Do you know why your school is requiring students to do the extra exams? Have you looked on the BON list of approved VN programs, is your school approved or are there warnings? What are the NCLEX pass rates for your school for the past five years are they below other schools?

Seems to me that trying to fight this using a lawyer or working through the BON (good luck with that) would be more time consuming than just taking the test.

No, your former school cannot force you to take this proctored test. You have the right to not comply, but your former school also has the right to not send your transcripts to the board for licensing.

Hence, I would find the time to take the test if I were you.

Is anyone else wondering if the OP meant to say that her school pays for her NCLEX?

Many private profit schools do this. They "include" licensing and NCLEX registration fees in their "tuition plan" which holds back students that have airway received their diploma such as this case the student isn't likely to have an extra $300-400 to pay for licensing and the nclex

So glad I attended a traditional nursing program that is highly recognized and highly competitive in the area. I will also complete my BSN at the teaching university at which I work. Call me old school but nothing like a brick and mortar education - especially if you want to attend graduate school.

As much I dislike LVN programs- they are outdated and do not serve the nursing need very well, they DO serve a purpose, especially for young single mothers that just need to get started in something. Where did OP say, by the way, she did NOT go to a 'brick and mortar school'? She most certainly did, I believe she said she lives an hour away. Isn't nice you had the luxury and ability to go to a brick and mortar school? Why didn't you go right into a 4 year program? Why did you ONLY go to a 2 year program? Did it serve a need for you? There are thousands of nurses who went right into a BSN program. Don't be so snobby...you don't know where she lives or what her circumstances are. I know many LVNs or LPNs that just needed to get started and they kept going for their RN, they just needed income and it was the right balance for them. Maybe there isn't a school around her she could afford. Its sounded by her comment that she is probably in an assistance program of some kind. Be grateful for what you have, and don't be so callous towards other people- nursing 101.
