Bye bye Nursing

Published

Saw this on Craigs list------rings true:

"Well, after a year of getting rejected I have finally decided to give nursing the bird. **** YOU NURSING FIELD! Too bad the schools and media are still insisting that people go to RN school. Believe me THERE IS NO ******* SHORTAGE! New grads are considered garbage. On top of that, the degree serves no purpose in any other setting. BSN is a complete waste of time and money.

I know, “some people got jobs”. That does not justify the majority (1000’s) who did not and are now working retail for minimum wage. There is something fundamentally wrong with this country. My school counselors, nursing instructors, media and nurses I know urged me to go into nursing. As soon as I got my degree and the check to the school cleared I heard the unmistakable sound of the door to nursing closing---slamming actually. And it is not just the economy. Hospitals turning huge profits stopped new grad programs and hire from agencies.

It is over. I am a stale grad and I am out of options. The new graduates fresh out of their precepts will be flooding the market to add to the already rancid oversaturated pool of disgruntled STALE GRADS. So, I guess giving up a nice job for school, dedicating 6 years (yes, I was foolish enough to get the BSN), dropping 20 grand and putting up with nursing school stress was all for nothing.

And no, higher education is out for 2 reasons. One, you need RN experience to qualify for any NP program. Second, why would I throw more money at a system that just failed me and ruined my life? It is clear that the educational system is bunk. I am completely embarrassed at the education I experienced at the California State University--It is appauling.

I hate nursing. I hate it so ******* much now. The true colors of the profession are now clear. So, now society can have a derelict because that is what I intend to become. I now plan to make a living mooching off the system."

I know you're upset, every time i have gone through a round of applications without success I feel this way. But there is a shortage of nurses.. it's the economy that has hit us hard. There are many ways you can use your license.. whether it be in clinics, schools, hospitals.. don't give up because you weren't able to get into a new grad program. There are many options, don't forget how flexible the field is due to frustration.

And from what I've heard, the East coast is still a place where it is fairly easy to find work. Maybe I've heard wrong, but it's worth a shot to look into. There isn't anything to lose but everything to gain.

Don't give up on your passion when hurdles are in your way, they'll always be there. But if nursing will make you happy, stick it out, maybe get a part-time for the bills in the meantime?

i graduated last 2009, just passed NCLEX last feb 2011, starting to find RN job, but there's one offered me a job, a caregiving job to a cancer patient at patient's home, it's my first job. my shift was 9pm-6am, on my 4th day, which was last night, i forgot to do the routine waking her up to drink water, because i fell asleep.. she was really upset. i know my mistake, then when the next caregiver came, she started to breakdown, i hate the drama, she's accusing me of many things. so i talked to her son, i told him my mistake and i told him it's better i won't come back again. patient and son talked, it is in their language (jews) i don't know what they are talking about, son was angry to me, he started questioning me being a nurse, then i told him, yes i know my fault, and im very sorry for that, but he said it's inexcusable, for 4 nights with 9hr per shift, i wasn't given the due salary, it was only half, i ddnt have the courage to question it coz the thing on my mind is to go out of there house, i was shaking, i am very upset, until now my heart is breaking, can;t help but cry... it makes my heart break and begin question myself do i really deserve my hard earned license? T.T what a heartbreaking experience for me. It just broke everything what i hard earned for 4 yrs in nursing school and a year of battle to conquer nclex. i admit i lack the skills, i need to learn more of it. since i graduated 2yrs ago. T.T i feel like the world fall on me. my heart is very heavy. :((

You should have nothing to worry about specially if you are young. What's going on is nothing new to the nursing profession. You might be surprised if you just have some patience.

Frankly, the new grad situation has nothing to do with the nursing profession and everything to do with the economy as a whole. Look around. New grads in EVERY profession are having trouble finding any kind of decent work right now.

Everyone is entitled to their anger and feeling sorry for themselves - but draw a line as to how long and deep you will let it go. Then pick up your chin, your self esteem, your big people panties and truck on. What choice do you have? You are better than this, I am sure of it. I can't way when or how it will get better, only that it will. Life is cyclical. It all comes around eventually.

Have you only applied to positions in your area/state? If so, why? I know some new grads may have circumstances that keep them from relocating, but for most of us, it is an unwillingness to move out of our comfort zone and go to where the jobs are. There does seem to be certain pockets where nursing jobs are more plentiful. If you are willing to work anywhere, even if it's just a year or two to get that coveted "RN experience required" that it's something many of us will have to consider. The new grad motto seems to be "Any unit, any place, any pay" :(

I love it when people say/state that. Yes, I looked EVERYWHERE--tried everything and every setting. Same answer every time= "Must have 1-2 years acute experience". There is no nursing shortage. Hospitals are cutting back and LAYING OFF experienced nures. New grads do not stand a chance unless you have an in. Nursing schools should stop spitting out new grads. It is turning into a scam for school admin to profit. Sad, really sad to get people's hopes up through nursing school only to graduate then with a useless degree.

there is not a shortage, there wasnt a shortage....only a shortage of good knowlegeable nurses that would put up with the crap.

granted, that was depressing to hear as an RN student, but quite frankly, it was well put .I wish either hospital admins, DONs, etc read this.
