burn out

quick facts: going into my 9th month of med-surg nurse. im a new grad. been in charge 2x. usually patient load 10. the other we had to protest i had 13 patients and 1 was a direct admission with blood transfusion. im still studying, going to school full time and working full time. i work really hard in getting where i am as most of us would and think is nursing for me? i would feel heart broken if its not true. the bad side of nursing example: shortage and under staff makes me hate the job. and i try not to view it just as a job. i just miserable.

To me, it sounds like an unsafe environment, and like you need to find somewhere better to work. I think anyone would be overwhelmed there, it's not that nursing's not for you. I know my hospital is a great place plus it's peds, but on my floor I've never had more than 6 patients, and it's usually 5. I've also been working about the same amount of time you have. I hope you find somewhere you can be happier and can really blossom!! let us know how it turns out. blessings.

You will probably have to start refusing to take report, as in getting a direct admit with a transfusion when you already have 12.

Are you kidding me??? Get outta there, find another place quick! 10 patients is just asking for mistakes to be made. That is crazy!

RUN---do not walk---away from that place before something terrible happens and costs you the license you worked so hard to earn.

You shouldn't be a charge nurse when you've been out of school for nine months. You shouldn't have 10 patients. You shouldn't be forced to take a direct admit who needs blood when you already have an unsafe patient load.

Am I making myself clear? THIS IS NURSE ABUSE. Med/Surg is tough under even the best of circumstances, but it's not this bad everywhere. Please, give yourself a chance and try another facility, or even another sort of nursing---we don't have a single nurse to waste.:o

Oh my Lord! I couldn't and wouldn't do it. Good luck!

i'm having trouble picking a hospital. what should i say to them why i wanted to quit after 9 month? why i didnt wait for a 1yr? doesn't it show how weak i am? i'm interested in the er by the way.

Just tell them the truth. That you have experienced unsafe patient loads in that floor and you are unequiped to handle them.

thanks for all the reply.

OMG, you had 10 pts, a direct admit with blood to transfuse, and Charge!!!! Are they crazy? GET OUT!!!! I #1 could not imagine being charge after 9 mos (which is where I am at as well) and I dern sure couldn't imagine having 10 patients period!!! I thought I had it bad getting 6-7 which still pi**** me off. You poor girl no wonder you are burned out. Do you work days or nights, not that it really matters. Good luck in getting a new job. Tell them that it was not safe for your patients to handle that load.
