Mar 27, 201016 yr Greetings, I'm new to the site, but I need some help. Here are two basic questions I need help with:1) Before administering the first dose of an antibiotic, you should:a) Check the result of WBCb) Inform patient of side effectsc) Check for patent IVd) Determine if culture and sensitivity has been ordered and collected2) Which of the following is the most important consideration when administering a drug via IV push?a) Use a medium gauge needle or needleless cannulab) check for blood return in the IV linec) Consider the diluents used to reconstitute the medicationd) Check the recommended rate for administering each bolus medication. The questions are pretty basic, but I just want to make sure I'm headed in the right direction. Thank you kindly! Mar 27, 201016 yr Folks might be more willing to help if you told us what you think the answers are. Don't be afraid to be wrong; that's what learning's for. We're not going to bite you....
Mar 27, 201016 yr Author Thanks guys for your help!! I was thinkin it was all the above also, but that wasn't an answer choice. But here's another question. Can you help me set this one up? A patient is to receive 375,000 units of Penicillin G Potassium suspension. The suspension contains 0.5 million units per milliliter. How many milliliters should the patient receive?0.375 ml0.5 ml0.75 ml
Mar 27, 201016 yr I am still a student, so I very well could be wrong, but with the first question I would want to make sure that a culture and senesitivity has been ordered, once you start the antibiotics it could change the result of the test, I would also want to know if the IV was patent, you could explain the side effects as you are giving the med.the second question I would say D) need to know how fast or slow to push the bolus, you would check for a patent IV site, but I dont think that you would check for a blood return. Have to look at the stem of the question which is the MOST important, and I believe that the rate of administration is....ex; you never give potassium IVP.and question 3;375,000/500000= 0.75 ml
Mar 28, 201016 yr I think 1.C check iv patent and 2. D it is very important to know the correct rate to push a bolus dose of medication.
Mar 28, 201016 yr Will you let us know what the correct answers are? I'm not in nursing school yet, but now I'm curious.
Mar 28, 201016 yr 1 is definately D. Gotta know the bug to fight before you just give a ABX. I know you can give broad spec, but you at least need a Cx to justify giving an ABX.2 B or D. you need to know patency, but more important you don't want to give to fast. Can't get back what's given........just my
