how bad is 11a-11p?

i am really not a morning person and hate what nights do to my body. i love the idea of 11-11 hours, but Ive heard it's a tough shift. i would be new to the ed. thoughts? the idea of getting uo at 530am for 7a-7p makes me shudder..

Its a great shift, but just be sure you have your journey home covered.

Public transit at 11pm is not wise.

Have a reliable car and be sure your cellphone is always charged.

Just leaving the hospital was taking your life into your hands. One night we were leaving for a beer and there was a running gun fight between a beamer and Mercedes at 35 mph past the hospital. We ducked behind some parked cars until it passed and continued the conversation as we walked to our cars.

1100-2300 can be good or bad depending on what you want, I like it. You don't deal with the lull at the end of night shift/beginning of day shift, usually busy when you arrive till when you leave. Trade offs are searching for and often not getting adequate lunch relief, and negotiating with the charge to find someone to give report to at the end of your shift. A great advantage is you are often not considered day/night shift so it's real easy to avoid the cliques and drama of either one. It's a good fit if you are self motivated, you can slip and slide through the BS and do good work, plus you can enjoy night shift potlucks and still have a normal life.

I used to like mid shift because of the hours, being able to sleep in, but the workload was draining. Also, sometimes you'll get a less than ideal assignment (the hallways) or something that lots of mid shifters do. It all depends on what works for you. I have a day shift now and though I hate waking up at the crack of dawn, at least some of my days will start off a little slower than usual. And I have not had a hallway assignment yet, which I like.

I guess "less than ideal" is subjective, but they can happen on all shifts. I get them on 7p-7a all the time.

It can be a crappy shift too, like I mentioned above. Make sure you know what the duties of the mid shifters entail, ask if they switch up assignments rather than always putting the mid shifters in the overflow areas.
