Well, I took the leap and am moving back to floor nursing. Been in the OR for over 6 years. Tired of the game and ready for a change.
I really do miss "awake" pt care. I'm going to a Cardiac IMC, pt ratio 4:1, will start out with 1 pt during orientation. Since I do hearts now I felt it would be a good fit having most of the same docs, etc.
Wish me luck...

Good Luck! Don't get discouraged during orientation, it may take awhile to adapt to awake Pt's.

Best of luck with your new assignment. I applaud you for trying something different. Having options is one of perks of nursing. It's tough being the "new" person but hopefully they will be welcoming.
Thanks everyone, I'm very excited about it. A lot of my OR peers think I'm crazy but then again a bunch of them say "take me with you."
I think I can be helpful pre-op with teaching etc, since this is my same pt population and it will be good to see the outcopmes as well. I plan on staying PRN in the OR and taking heart call once in while just to keep those skills as well.

Good LUCK!!!
I would LOVE to "suit up" into scrubs and go back to bedside (ICU/PICU)...but really can't (physical limitations now)....so jump back into the pool and go get 'em!!

Good luck and congratulations on the change!!!! I am hoping to get away from the bedside for awhile. How is it working in the OR? Are the surgeons intimidating?

It's great you recognized you needed a change.... Not all nurses do, and you can tell who they are..
Best of luck:)
It's different from any other kind of nursing. While yes you are the pt advocate, and need to make sure all positioning is correct, ect....I still feel more like a gopher than a nurse. Don't get me wrong, it's a great specialty but I am just burnt out. The surgeons can be tough but not any worse than the ones that complain because you call them about thier pt!!! I'm not excited about going back to that LOL
I'm changing due to politics and favoritism, I'm sure there will be that everywhere but I won't have to worry about it for a while. And I hate to say it but I'm really looking forward to the fact that my new clinical director is male.

I believe there is favoritism too. I am glad to work on a unit where there is probably not as much of that as there could be. You just have to find the right one.

Good Luck! I have been contemplating a similar move from OR. Keep us posted. Sometimes change is the best thing.

I was a cardiac nurse for years and I wish I would have had some OR training before starting the position so I could have told my patients what is was really like, not just what I heard. What a great background you are brining to the floor. I am sure the nurses (especially the new ones) will see you as a great resource.
Also,

You seriously have to update us in 6 months or so to let us know how that works. Before I came to nursing, I worked in a male dominated workplace. The differences are unbelievable. Some good, some not so good.
