Hi--can anyone tell me how to import avatars from outside this website?--It kind of gives us that option on the avatar page and I cannot figure it out. Some members have some cool avatars and I need your feedback.

Please post and thanks.

Hi guys. You just go to your user CP, which you should see at the upper left above the first post on this thread. Then on your left you will see a link for edit you avater (or something like that). Then you can choose from the available ones, or just below that will be an option for you to upload one from your computer. It will tell you the file size limits there too, which I can't remember off the top of my head. Good luck!

There are lots of websites that have free avatars......sorry, I don't know how to post links.......a couple that I use often are avatarity.com and hotavatars.com. There is also another one, abi.station.com, where you can make your own.

I also have Webshots on my computer, and you can download small pictures from the "community" photo section. Find a photo you like, right-click on it, then click "Save as" to save the picture into whatever file you select (mine are in My Documents). Then, when you want to change your avatar, go to allnurses User CP and click on Edit Avatar; click the button Use Custom Avatar, then scroll down to where it says "upload an avatar from your computer" and click on "browse". Open the file, and that should do it.......of course, avatars have to be 100 X 100 pixels or smaller to fit. Try it, and see what you come up with! :)

Along the lines of what mjlrn said, it is very easy to make your own avatar if you don't find one that pleases you amongst the millions available for free on the internet. You can use any graphics program like paint shop pro (my favorite) or adobe photo shop or anything. Just remember to stick to the size limits (both pixels and Kb).

I used a free pic posting site called Photobucket. I upload my pics I want into the site, then I right click on the pic once it shows up...pick properties from the scroll list, and highlight the web address it gives you. Right click on the highlighted address and hit copy from the scroll that will pop up. You have now copied the address for that picture.

Then, come here, log in, and go to edit your avatar, down a ways (below the site given avatars) is a area you can put a link to the address of your picture. Right click on that bar for the address and chose 'paste' from you scroll..that will add the address! Press save changes at the bottom and that should work.

The reason I have to do it this way is because of my significant firewall protection. In order for me to upload I have to turn them off..and so far Photobucket seems safe for me to do this...plus it is less access for sites going into my computer whenever I want to put a pic there (which also would make me take off my firewall) . Just one place, and I can store, upload and use these pics multiple times :). I am a admin at another forum, and switch pics constantly for fun...so this is a good way to do it with less invasive access to my hard drive!

Just a word of caution - it is not considered good "nettiquette" to hotlink to an avatar site - that is load their url into the avatar browser - this causes an increase in bandwidth usage and some consider it "stealing" bandwidth. It is best to download to your own computer and upload here. Abi-station is one of the best around. In truth any thumbnail picture can be used as an avatar. I have a whole host of ones that are fantasy themed.
