We self schedule at my hospital and I work 3 12's. After we all sign up we then all go back and have to move one shift to help the needs of the department. I always have done more than one (I have been working here for 1 year). I really try to help the shifts that are empty as much as I can. I usually make at least 4 changes. Most staff only make the required one change. Anyway....I have worked a 2nd job per diem at a pediatricians office for the past 4 years. I work 4 hours a week and work only around my schedule at the hospital. At my per diem job they have asked me to work one full day a week 8 hours, a set day every week. We chose Mondays. It will work best for me because I often work until 3am but I never do on the weekends. So I called my boss and asked her about this and she said she would not approve a set day off. I asked if it was specifically because it was Monday and she said no she would not approve any day off. She said she will not even do this for anyone for childcare. She told me I can just not schedule myself and if I get scheduled I will have to find someone to work for me. OK so here of my issue....more than a few nurses work a set schedule and have off certain days because they don't have child care. Unfortunately I feel like an idiot for trying to do things the right way and call my boss and ask because my friend I work with always has a certain day off and she just requests it every month and the scheduler never gives her a problem. I already feel like my boss does not like me. She is extremely non confrontational and if asked anything or if a complaint is made she does not like you anymore. I just feel stressed out over this. Wish things could be different. I have committed to Mondays at this other job and am sticking with it.

Full time job trumps a per diem job any day. You may fight for these Mondays...right out of a job. I understand what you are saying. Another job vs. day care are NOT equal IMO for a need for a set day off.

As I understand it, You are doing extra 12 shifts so other units will be full staff or you are moving more than you are required to help other units? Stop it. Stop moving more. Is it in your job description to move more than anyone else? Then don't. Unless your job is to see that all units are covered with staff, don't. Your job is to work as a nurse, not a scheduler. If the supervisor doesn't like it tell her you will continue to do more if you get Monday off. If the staff doesn't like it tell them the reason. If you don't get paid extra for moving more then your share, don't do it. Way back when I started nursing I use to do extra work, come in on may days off to help, work short so another unit could have staff,do my work and the aide's work and you know what when the cuts came I was the first to go. Worry about yourself first, not the hospital's staffing.
amen!
I'm not working on another unit. I am filling holes on my unit. But you are TOTALLYU right I am going above and beyond for nothing. And of coorifice full time trumps per diem. BUT it does bother me that because of child care people get set days off and the rest of us cant have a set day off cuz we dont have kids. An extra job means alot to me as I need the money.

Why should one person's day care trump another person's per diem job?
Don't ya know?
People with kids are entitled to whatever off they want just by virtue of having kids!
All the holidays, every Christmas, first day of school, last day of school, earth day, black friday, whatever.
The people without kids are just supposed to suck it up and work everything else!
i couldn't agree more! My last 2 jobs I always had a set day off with no issue. Everyone that has kids in my department has set days off. Just bothers me. Don;t get me wrong I have nothing against people with kids having days off because of child care. BUT the rest of us deserve the same. Having a 2nd job is crucial for me right now.

I wish everything can be fair just as much as the next person but it'll never be. How about the smokers who get frequent smoke breaks the rest of us don't?
I do hope you can get the set day off you've worked for. Seriously, who wants to work a 4th day unless it's absolutely necessary, especially in this economy? Good luck to you :)

Hilarious, but sadly true..Why do people with kids think their lives trump those without kids? Sorry you chose to reproduce not my problem.
The first day of school off kills me...really? I can see it for the real first day of school but every year? Your kid is 10, they dont need mama to take them the first day of school anymore.

I wanted a set schedule, so when ever possible (and pretty much got it since I only applied for jobs that were available for my preferred schedule- which did change at times over the years) I worked every weekend. It was great. During the week, the stores were less crowded, I could make appointments, etc. And I always knew when I'd be off. I worked Sat-Sun-Mon 12s; still had Fridays. OR, if I got tired of 12s, I'd work M-F 8s in LTC/MDS positions. :)
Ya gotta be willing to do some horse trading- I gave up weekends to get a set schedule. But it worked for me:)
