Any advice on statistics

Published

Anyone took the class. Any tips that can help me this fall. I don't want to the expect from the class. I love math. Any information will be helpful thank you :).

My only advice. DON'T GET BEHIND. Most math is cumulative, meaning what you learned the day before builds into the next lesson, but in Statistics it is even more so. Do not go to class unless you 100% understand and MASTERED what was taught the day before. I loved Stats, because it is mostly formulas

The good thing about stats as another poster pointed out is that it's a lot of formulas, & if you get a ti-83 or 84 it does all the work for you! Also YouTube is really helpful with tons of videos with step by step instructions on how to solve and how to put the #'s into your calculator.. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the advice :).

As another poster said, it os a lot of formulas but excel makes it much much easier to compute. I just finished stats this summer....it was not easy but it wasnt nearly as bad as I thought it would have been. I am attaching a link that has a ton of excel templates that were super helpful when it came to homework. my prof also allowed us to use them during exams which was great.

also you can download megastat for excel for free...it has just about every formula you would need.

good luck!!

I recommend practicing problems daily. For my stats class, homework was assigned but not due. I made it a point to still do it like it was going to be graded. This was my "studying". I can't stand math but actually really liked statistics because I could use it in real life.

Don't miss class. It moves fast, so you have to be there inorder to keep up or you will fall behind fast. Practice. This is not normal math. You have to put together everything that you have previously learned. If your school offer tutoring I suggest you go for test review. Good luck!

I'm thankful for all the insight and advice. This is information I will take with me :).

I'm taking statistics this fall as well. Thanks everyone for the advice!

I kept a 5 subject notebook with all my work and I wrote detailed notes to myself on homework (for ex. which function I used on my calculator for that particular problem). It paid off because the tests came straight from the homework and I just had to look back at my homework and notes to review. At first I worked everything on scratch paper and thew it away, but I couldn't remember how I got the answer come test time.

I struggle with math, it is my weakest subject. I manged to ace stats by doing lots of practice problems then checking my work and seeing where I went wrong. I would also recommed if you do not all ready know how to use your TI83 well to spend a few days getting to know your calculator! I hate to admit it but I still do not understand statistics nor can I use critical thinking when it comes to stats. This is one of the few classes where I had to just plain memorize things by writing it over and over and doing practice problems.

Math is not easy for me either. I studied my butt off, and still struggled! I discovered that I was over thinking most of it. I found that the practice test problems directly correlated with the actual test problems! Common sense- but it gave me a 100% on the final so I could pull a B! Just practice all you can, and if your teacher gives you practice problems or a study guide- use it! Good luck!
