AMEDD 2018 66s

Hello all! I have recently been selected for commission as a 66s (critical care nurse) into active duty Army. Just waiting on my scroll and my release from my current unit (Reserve unit). Just wondering if anyone else out there is headed this same direction and can provide some good insight about the Army side of nursing. I have been in the Reserves for 14 years now and a nurse for 3 (all ICU). Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

Yay! That's so exciting! I'm an Army kid and my mom worked closely with the vet clinic and medical clinic personnel, but she was a food inspector so I can't help you in terms of nursing, plus our most recent base didn't have critical care since they don't do inpatient here anymore.

How was it being in the reserves and working in a civilian hospital? I'm thinking I may try to join the reserves after a few months/year or two since I just graduated, but I don't want to feel like I have no me time between working full time and being in the reserves.

Welcome to allnurses and congratulations on your selection! I have moved your post to the government/military forum to encourage responses. You'll find a lot of others who were just selected here. :) I spent 4.5 years as a 66HM5, now called 66T (ER/trauma). I found that unless deployed, the acuity tends to be fairly low in the smaller community hospitals (MEDDACs). Typically the larger medical centers (MEDCENs) may have sicker patients, but as an experienced nurse, you're likely to be assigned to a MEDDAC vs. a MEDCEN - the smaller hospitals will need your expertise! After I came home from Afghanistan, I did some moonlighting at a civilian Level 1 and other civilian ERs with constant trauma and higher acuity patients to keep my skills sharp. Hopefully you'll get all squared away with the scrolling process and your release, and then you can work with your branch manager at HRC to figure out where you'll go.

What was your Reserves MOS or AOC?

Congrats! I commissioned a couple of weeks ago (66T) and I am now awaiting orders.

Thanks for the input! The reserves is not difficult at all. It can be an inconvenience one weekend a month, etc. but I have been to some really cool places and met some even cooler people and lifelong friends. I would not trade the experiences for anything. It just depends on what you want out of it. But I will say try to go in as a commissioned officer, not enlisted like me. I wish you the best of luck!

Awesome! Congrats to you as well! Who knows, we might end up in the same course!

Thank you for moving my post and for all your input! I am in a transportation unit (88N). I am looking forward to the change, but I do have a fear of being bored. I very much enjoy the high acuity where I currently am. Hopefully it keeps me busy!

Hello Traumasaurus! I too was selected by the Oct 2017 board as a 66T. I have just recently received my scroll back and will be commissioning soon. Do you have your ordered yet for DCC? I was hoping for the June date but am afraid at this point I will be pushed back since my scroll took so long. Have you heard of anyone else receiving their dates yet? I'm just trying to get an idea of my possible time frame. Thanks!

Ftr66T2018, congratulations on your commissioning soon! I commissioned about a week ago as 66S (finally after 9+months). Recruiter tells me I will probably end up in the August BOLC (waiting on orders now). If you don't make June maybe I will see you in August! Best of luck to you!

I am also 66S Active Duty. Has anyone received orders yet? Where are yall hoping to be stationed after BOLC?

Texasbronco1210, I am waiting on orders but I think I should end up in this next August BOLC. I requested to station in San Antonio as well.

JLB,

I am currently in the same position, I've been in USAR for almost 2 years but I started an active duty packet sometime in March, 2018. The G1 signed my dd368 and my recruiter told me my "unofficial" scroll was approved June 30th. I will be going in as a 66S as well, It's been a month and I haven't heard anything back ( total 5 months ) yet. I was wondering what happened with your situation and how long your whole process took - thank you for sharing and best of luck. And also congrats !

Hi JLB ,

Can you or anyone else on this post explain what the board process is like? Like several others, I am in the USAR currently and I work in the ICU. I am interested in switching to active duty as a 66S and have talked to several AMEDD recruiters. From what I understand, the deadline to submit your packet is in October and that you have to be released by your current unit. I was told it could take several months to get formal orders to AD. I just want to plan the next year or two accordingly so that I know when to submit resignation letter, find housing, and help my SO find a job in advanced in whatever area we would be moving to. Also, what is a scroll?

Also congrats on getting selected for AD!

Thanks!
