Algebra or Statistics?

Just a general question about these 2 classes.

Some of the programs I am applying to require Intermediate Algebra or higher. Would statistics be considered a higher level of math?

Thanks

Amanda

At my school, when you take the assessment test it indicates where you should start out at. I'd been out of school for years so I opted to start easy and begin with intermediate algebra.

It goes: Beginning algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra, statistics. College algebra is required at my school for stats if you don't test straight into stats.

stats are required at my college along with college algebra. dont i just love math:uhoh3:

Ok thanks for the input

I'm going to double check with the nursing schools too. If I don't need intermediate algebra that is just one less class I need to take.

my school requires both algebra and statistics, thererore I cannot determine which is higher, But, algebra has to be taken before statistics, so probably stats is higher. I enjoyed stats, algebra was a struggle for me it made no sense, while ststs related to our daily lives.

Best wishes to you!!

Yes statistics is the higher level course.

I must be the exception here but both my undergraduate institution where I got my BA and the Comm. college I am taking my nursing pre-reqs at, Statistics is considered LOWER than College Algebra. I believe at my undergrad stats was 108 and college algebra was 160, at my comm college it's 150 for stats and 160 for college algebra. There are of course higher levels of statistics, such as the stats required for many science majors but those are not typically required by nursing programs.

Juding from being in nursing school now i would go for algebra, statistics is good though for when you get to research class in nursing school.

if you plan to pursue your education past an adn (not sure which degree you are going for) take statistics. statistics is required for most bsn and other higher level degrees.

as far as which one is more difficult, you need a basic understanding of algebra to get through statistics so i would think statistics is more difficult. at my school, algebra is a requirement before you can take it

I already have my BA and the BSN programs require stats but the ADN programs require intermediate algebra.

I'm just trying to get all the classes done and over with that I need.

not in any universities i went to. statistics classes were part of the behavioral sciences classes (psychology, sociology, etc.) and college algebra was a pre-requisite to take them. statistics was required for research classes which were required in almost all bachelor level upper level classes.

check the college catalog of the school you are in or planning to attend and see what the math requirements are and what they will accept to fulfill those requirements. this kind of information is usually included in the catalog under the degree requirements.

BSN/RN to BSN programs from the ones I have looked at they require Stats and College Algebra. ADN programs usually require stats and not college algebra. I guess it just depends on the school. I think Algebra was harder and that stats was easy.

I'm pretty sure Algebra is a pre-req for statistics.

Even so, I don't think only taking stats would fulfill the algebra requirement, it's like apples and oranges, even if one is a higher course number they're different subjects.

I'm in stats atm... and it's really not that bad & I hate math! Good luck with whatever you end up doing!
