Hello! I am going into an ADN program here in Florida. I was told by a friend in Arizona that you can't get hired around her area unless you have a bachelors. I plan on getting my bachelors, but wanted to start working first. Do you think I will have difficultly getting a job here in Florida because I don't have a bachelors? Thanks in advance!

You should post this in the Florida nurses' forum

It depends on your area. Some larger cities are looking for BSN over ADN in hospital settings. In smaller communities, the ADN can still find work.
I'm in Panama City! There are no bsn programs here.

Check with you local hospitals to see if they have strong preference for BSNs. Pick up the phone and call the Nurse Recruiters for those hospitals and ask them. Go to a job fair and talk to them face-to-face (if there is such a job fair) etc. You should also look at their advertisements for new staff members in the newspaper and online to see if they give any clues as to their hiring preferences there.
Finally, ask the schools you are considering to give you actual data (numbers, etc.) about the job offeres received by recent graduates. Where are their recent graduates working? Don't rely on vague statements about their grads having lots of opportunities everywhere -- ask if there is any hard data for you see.
The job market really does vary greatly from one region to another. So you have to get very specific in your search for information about your likelihood of being hired.
You will probably not find a problem of BSN over ADN credentials for work, but with the downturn of Florida's economy, jobs are getting harder to find. You can always do an online search of the hospitals in your area to see what is open.

I live in Miami which I wouldn't consider a "small city" by any means, especially since when people say "Miami" it usually also encompasses all the "smaller" satellite cities that surround it. We have probably 4 major hospital systems and ADN RNs are hired here all the time, myself included. Is there pressure to pursue your BSN? Absolutely. But it is absolutely possible to gain employment with your ADN down here. Don't be surprised if certain hospital systems (especially Baptist) requires you to sign a contract which entails beginning a BSN program by a given deadline...

Hello all,
I am an ADN prepared nurse with one year of med-surg/transplant experience. I am interested in moving to Jacksonville FL. I would love to work in critical care at Shands Jax or St. Vincent's. Does anyone have any insight about the hiring process, pay, benefits, and shift differentials at these facilities? Thanks for your help.

Here in Jacksonville there are tons of nursing jobs currently available. Most job postings I've come across here stated ADN and/or BSN preferred. So, it really does depend on where you are in Florida, but you can definitely find work if not in the hospital then at other facilities.
