ADN-BSN paper

So, I'm doing my online BSN, writing my very first paper of the program. I'm a little rusty :)My paper wants me to describe a patient care situation in which I describe how nursing care or approaches to decision making may differ based on education prep (BSN vs ADN) I just need some brainstorming ideas! I am at a total block. My paper is finished, except for this requirement. I'm an ADN-it's not easy to think BSN yet :)Thanks in advance

This subject gets under my skin. My irreverent response is..... nothing.... except more debt.

This....better than less than..... rhetoric is destroying the nursing profession. My BSN gave me nothing that improved my practice and I was already a director of emergency and critical care services...but it did make my boss happy.

However what they are looking for is something like this......BSN/ADN.

Though they are prepared in two different settings when completion of these programs both sit for NCLEX-RN exam. The NCLEX is the state board to license and RN for competency to work as a registered nurse. There are few differences in competencies between associate- degree nurses and baccalaureate degree level nurses including their level of commitment, leadership skills and their quality of patient care.

Education is an infinite process. Every day, new developments emerge and new deceases and remedies discovered. The overall outlook of healthcare professions has dramatically changed in the past few decades. Nursing plays a very critical and important part in efficient care and patient safety. Nurses work shoulder to shoulder with physicians in treatment planning and management. Legal and ethical responsibility of the care provided is also increasingly shared by the Nurses. Nursing profession thus calls for better qualified and well groomed nurses. Even though associate degree programs prepare nurses for patient care in a hospital setting, that training is insufficient for a variety of nursing roles.

Throw in something about utilizing evidence-based practice. EBP is supposedly not taught in ADN programs, though the reality is that most ADN programs will at least give you an intro to it, if not more than that :) But humor them.

We use EBP in my ADN program

We use EBP all.the.time in my ADN program. Every paper/care plan/written assignment has to have an EBP article cited and referenced. Heck, we even did an assignment strictly on EBP papers :)

Every program is different.

I don't see how education ADN vs BSN would apply to EBP views.

I'm no help :/ just wanted to give my .02

Where might we be if they had focused on "us" rather than "us vs them" within nursing for the last half-century :-(

Anyway to the OP . . .this should give you lots of food for thought if you are not familiar with it.

You can download the .pdf called "Future of Nursing: Focus on Education" from the list at the top.

I had very good coverage of EBP in my ADN program as well. But when I started the RN-BSN program, all I kept hearing is, "you probably weren't taught this," or "ADNs may not fully appreciate EBP," or "this is what will set you (the BSN) apart from the ADN-prepared nurse." So that's the mentality, at least it was in the RN-BSN programs that I was in. I figured that this might be something the OP's assignment was looking for

every time we do something " by the book", even something as simple as washing our hands we are using evidenced based practice....it really gets under my skin to say ADN/ASN programs don't use EBP.....Grrrrrrrrrrr

I know, they think we (ADN/diplomas) all crawled out from under rocks or something.

Sometimes I wonder if they use language as a device to create a mystique around a concept which is not unusual or difficult to grasp by creating new buzzwords or acronyms. This can intimidate people into believing they know less than they really do.

You could use something regarding cultural competency. I was trying to think of something that would be useful in nursing that I've learned in my non nursing BSN required classes and this came to mind- I learned a TON about other cultures/religions in my philosophy of human nature class that an ADN student wouldn't e required to take. A nursing class just doesn't have that much time to spend on different religions and cultures.
