Academic Cheating and Future?

Published

I was caught using my cellular device during an Ethics exam. There is no excuse, and I understand the seriousness of my infraction.

Fortunately, I was allowed to continue matriculation in my program. I was given an F for the course, and a letter regarding the details of the situation is in my student file.

Will this affect me in terms of continuing my education, my employment in the nursing field, and any future prospects of applying to graduate school?

It probably wont affect you in finding a job. An employer would never find out, unless you personally bring it up. However, it most definitely will affect you if you ever decide to apply to graduate school. Chances are, most schools will not even consider you now because of what you did.

Interesting class to cheat in.

Were you actually using your cell to cheat, or were you texting? If you were texting you can get your cell records from your carrier and show what you were doing. If you actually were cheating on an ETHICS exam... well, if you ever want to see graduate school you should probably move, start over, and never mention that you went to school before. :p

My A&P teacher told us at the beginning of the semester that if he caught us cheating he would personally make sure we never worked in that area, so... yea. That wasn't a small mistake you made I'm sorry to say.

You're lucky they didn't mark your transcript with an X, which all schools know means failure due to cheating. My micro professor when I was taking pre-reqs made it clear he'd fail anyone with an X if they cheated.

It all really depends on how things show up on your transcript. If it's just an F with no indication for the reason then you might be ok.

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

I've heard of a few units (such as PICU) that were so competitive for new grads that they would request copies of their transcript with the application, but those have been very few and far in-between. I can't see how this will change your job prospects as a nurse unless that happens and you have to explain your F.

Unfortunately, I also agree that grad school is going to be very difficult for you to get into. But hey, what do I know.

It's pretty ironic that you were caught cheating on an ethics test...I'm sorry, but I have to laugh at that.

Which, ironically, would be further academic dishonesty, and would get the OP's application tossed by any future school that finds out (or figures it out).
