A good Pathophysiology textbook?

Published

I absolutely despise my Patho textbook and was wondering if anyone could recommend a pathophysiology textbook they found useful. I won't need it for any classes after this semester, but I'd like to get another for reference use. I find that I go online to other sources just so concepts are worded clearly and understandably.

P.S. In case you need a really good Pharmacology textbook, I highly recommend the one we are using this semester: Pharmacology for Nursing Care by Richard A. Lehne. Very well organized and the explanations are clear and easy to commit to memory.

Thanks

We use this one

Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults And Children Fifth Edition (Hardcover)

by Kathryn L. McCance (Author), Sue E. Huether (Author)

I love it. It has everything I need albeit it is not what I call an " easy" read. It is thorough however.

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

As mentioned, probably the best textbook out there for nurses is Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children by Kathryn L. McCance and Sue E. Heuther currently in it's 5th edition of publication. It costs $93.95. It can be difficult to read and is a very scholarly work. There are easier editions by these authors as well that are not as expensive, but not as inclusive.

Another book I use here at home for reference that is more informal and much easier to read is

Pathophysiology: A 2-in-1 Reference for Nurses by Springhouse, Springhouse Publishing Company Staff. It costs $44.95.

I also use the Mcane Heuther text. I often supplement it with my

Textbook of Medical Physiology by Guyton and Hall. It helps clarify some of the concepts I am having trouble with.

Specializes in SRNA.

we are currently using pathophysiology: clinical concepts of disease processes (sylvia a. price & lorraine m. wilson). i think its quite clear and a very useful tool. http://www.amazon.com/pathophysiology-clinical-concepts-disease-processes/dp/0323014550

Specializes in Adolescent Psych, PICU.

I also really like (and refer to often) Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults And Children Fifth Edition (Hardcover) by Kathryn L. McCance.

Specializes in med-surg.

We're using The Nature of Disease: Pathology for the Health Professions by McConnell. It's short and sweet, which has both advantages and disadvantages. Our proferssor also recommends Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy.

Specializes in Maternity, quality.

We use Porth's Pathophysiology: Concepts of Altered Health States (7th ed). It's another thorough but difficult read. But I've used it a lot as a resource and it provides good explanations. Porth also has an "Essentials of Pathophysiology" book which I think is a slightly less verbose version of my book. That one might be a bit easier of a read.

Thanks for the responses :) I also use the McCance and Heuther book, which I agree is a difficult read and I just don't like it for use as a textbook, but I will keep it for reference. I am going to check out some of the others that were suggested here...never hurts to have more than one textbook to refer to, especially if it is an easier "more compact" version to refresh with.

Thanks again :)

Specializes in Med Surg, ER, OR.

I like the Nursing Made Incredibly Easy series of books. They aren't great for everybody but include many condensed versions of the hard to follow topics in the 10-lb school path book. Just my 2 cents

I'm taking Pathophys right now and I don't like our main text. However, our prof recommended a wonderful Patho handbook that is sooo easy to read. It really simplifies things and cuts out all the extraneous crap. I feel like I can just read through it like a story book. If you're interested, look for "Handbook of Pathophysiology", by Elizabeth J. Corwin

Specializes in Ante-Intra-Postpartum, Post Gyne.

Wish I could help you out. We used "Understanding Pathophysiology" by Heuther and McCance......HORRIBLE!! Everyone in my class complained about it, even the teachers said it made the subject unnecessarily confusing!

I bought Pathophysiology made Incredible Easy as a supplement.

I second that Lehne book ROCKS, made me love pharm and helped me get an A- in the class.
