12hr shifts and holidays

This question is for the people who work 12 hr. shifts. What is your hospital/unit policy for holidays? Does your unit still make everyone work their 12 hr. shifts or is there some flexibility so that you are able to work shorter shifts so that everyone gets to spend time with their family?

On my unit, there are NO 12's on holidays, only 8's. The 12 hour people are part of two shifts and they are expected to work an 8 on one of their shifts. Example would be a 12 hour day or night person doing 3-11 instead, because both of those people belong partly to evenings as well as to days or nights.

On my unit, we had a couple who did that on Christmas (they split it 6 hrs apiece). On days, it helps, so people could have some time w/ family. I don't know how they decided who got half a holiday (I'm per diem so it didn't really effect me).

We have to work 12's on the holiday...we hate it, but the scheduler says that she has to use less people than with 8's therefore more people get off. Still hate it.

We have to work 12 hour shifts, yet we only accrue 8 hours of holiday to use later. Nice policy, huh?

That is also one of the problems that we are having. We are now being forced to work 12 hr shifts on holidays...thanks to a new manager...and we also only get 8 hrs of holiday time back. Plus our holiday pay on christmas for example is 4pm Xmas eve - 4pm christmas day. So for me...who works 8am-8pm I am getting jipped my last 4 hrs of the shift! Not to mention the fact that I have 2 precious babies whom I would not see on Christmas day...the entire day! I just don't see how this is fair!

we are allowed to be creative as long as coverage is complete. some split their shift (esp dayshift) into 6 hour blocks, whatever works, I say.

one of my units worked 8 hr shifts for 2 holidays and had 2 off (holidays being christmas, new years, thanksgiving and the fourth of july). whatever two you worked the year before, you knew you had off the following year. i've also been a traveler and seen only 12 hr shifts on holidays. it is more work for the manager the first time doing, but i think overall people are happier. :)

Hospital healthcare........no such things as holidays or weekends. We work 12hr shifts. We either work Christmas day or Christmas eve. All other "holidays" are just days to us. Long time ago they use to give you a day back if you were scheduled to work a holiday. Now, however, it goes into a PTO bank along with your "regular earned time off". This year Christmas was on my scheduled weekend off...Had to work that Fri and then again the whole next weekend.(New Years). Sometimes being a RN.....sux's......LOL

How many hours a nurse works on a holiday depends on what their regular shift commitment is. We have nurses who work 8's and 12's. Other units in the hospital have 8's, 10's, and 12's. I work 12's. Time and a half is included on holidays.
