I was wondering if anyone could share with me that correct NCLEX way/order of taking off PPE such as gloves, gowns, goggles....etc., or the resource that I could find this information in. I've read on this site that this information needs to be known so I'm just hoping that someone would share this knowledge with me.....PLEASE!!

Contact:

Donning: Wash hands. Put on gown then gloves before going inside pt's room.

Removing: Remove gloves then gown before leaving pt's room. Wash hands

Droplet:

Donning: Wash hands. Put on mask, eye protection, gown then gloves, all before going inside pt's room.

Removing: Remove gloves then gown. Wash hands. Remove mask then eye protection. All before leaving pt's room. Wash hands

Airborne:

Donning: Wash hands. Put on N95 Respirator (mask). Then don gown then gloves, outside pt's room.

Go with the CDC..I got my information from a poster in the nurses break room, just took and passed the NCLEX, but that doesn't mean I got the infection control q's correct..sorry for the confusion :chair: lol

personally, in the real world, I would never remove my gloves before my gown...that would mean touching a possibly soiled gown with bare hands. Instead, cross your arms, reach back and grab the gown at your shoulders, tear it off, pull your arms through, ball up the gown, and remove the gloves outside the balled up gown, throwing all of it away together. This way, you never touch the outside of the gown with bare hands.

That is exactly what I was thinking... & how I do it. So on my HESI I answered it that way and of course it was wrong. But yeah a gown can be dirty anywhere! i don't want to touch it without gloves.

****I am taking CNA classes right now and real world or not the reason why you take your gloves off before your gown is because your gloves go OVER the cuff of the gown so the cuff is not soiled and you cannot take your gown off first without getting the gloves off the cuff. Otherwise you will contaminate your hands and wrists and arms or anything else in the process. Once you remove the gloves you remove the gown by sliding your fingers in the cuff and pull your hand through the sleeve like you would your glove. Using the hand inside the sleeve you pull the cuff on the other hand out to slide your hand out of the other sleeve. You then begin to roll the gown into itself by only touching the part of the gown that was against your body. The gown is supposed to be fluid resistant which is why by only touching the clean cuffs and the inside of the gown you will not be soiled/contaminated. Also the back is always considered clean so before you remove the gown you untie the back and pull it forward(slide your fingers inside the neckline from the back down to the front. Always use proper handwashing procedures in between all tasks. I would follow the CDC or your state regulations. But handwashing is the most important. I'm pretty certain when in full LPW yiu wash your hands between the removal of every piece. I'll double check. Hope this helps!
