It was on the news that Jack went into rehab for use of 'legal herion' called Oxytocin. I have never heard of anything like this, how is this a prescription drug if they compare it to a deadly street drug?? I was shocked to hear this.

I haven't read or heard on TV what Jack Osbourne was taking, but I think you might mean Oxcontin. It's a long acting narcotic analgesic, and a Godsend for many people in pain. If sold on the street (usually a $1 a mg, I believe) drug addicts can crush it and take it that way, which makes it an immediate release and makes them high. Unfortunately, many drug stores have been robbed and employees have been killed because of addicts/drug dealers stealing this drug, but again, it's a great pain killer for people who need it.

The only difference between street drugs and prescription is who is selling it.

The drug was, in fact, oxycontin & not oxytocin. Oxytocin is used in labor & delivery. As far as "deadly street drugs", any medication, if in the wrong hands and used in an inappropriate manner could be labled as "deadly".

In regard to oxycontin, there has been much publicity in regard to the abuse of this drug. In my area, some have admitted to crushing the pills and injecting it intravenously. People are so stupid. I, for one, cannot comprehend that "mentality" or desire.

It is compared to heroin because it comes from the same plant that heroin comes from. Also as a side note Jack Osbourne is out of rehab already. He played the drums at the end of Ozzy's guitarists solo (Zak Wylde) at the first show of OZZFEST this year in San Antonio. It was a great show...Marilyn Manson really puts on a stage show and Korn really got the crowd going.

Don't know for sure but maybe they use the term "LEGAL Heroin" because Oxycontin is a legitimate drug that can be obtained legally if you need it and it is prescribed by a doc. with Rx. Whereas, typical street heroin is mixed up by someone on the street.

Like I said, don't know for sure, I have never heard the term "Legal Heroin" and certainly have never heard the term "legal" used when describing/discussing anyone that has an addiction to a substance.

I think that term is mis-leading and does not illude to the seriousness of an addiction to oxycontin, or any drug for that matter.

The police certainly won't consider it "legal" to use it if you do not have a prescription for it and abuse it.

It's funny you brought this up because my nursing instructor was discussing just last night, patients that she has seen come in with raging infections and huge swelling near their veins/inject. sites because of crushing oxycontin and injecting it. She also said her husband who is a pharmacist, one day had a person come in with a prescription that was originally written by the doctor for (15) oxycontin pills, and they had changed it to (150) by adding a zero at the end.

I saw an interview with Jack on MTV. When the reporter asked him what oxycontin was, Jack told him that in two words its "legal heroine". The press must of took that quote for their headlines.

Sounds like someone trying to "legitimize" their illegal use of a substance.

From the interview, that was his simplistic way of describing the drug. He justified his use of the drug by saying it was a social drug and he just wanted to fit in.

What I thought was funny was how Ozzy said taht the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree.

glad HE has access to the best rehab programs. hopefully, he uses his resources and recovers.

I had read that Jack Osbourne was in rehab also. I am familiar with the drug he was abusing.

Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with "poor lil rich kids." Please don't flame, just an opinion :). I'm glad that his family has the resources to help him clean himself up since he is just a kid. I just wish that the resources were available to everyone that needed them.

So, that is where my view came from. It' s NOT an unheard-of reason people choose to use drugs recreationally. It's sad but a fact of life, especially when one had unlimited funds and free time to do nothing with his life. Hopefully, he can get it together.
