Would you retake a class because of a B???

I think I may have gotten a B in Algebra. Would any of you out there retake the class if you got a B?

I might if it kept me out of a nursing program. If it's really competitive and based on GPA's, then you may want to consider how it affects. Most likely you've probably done better in other classes, so you might not need to. Try talking to nursing admissions to see what the GPA range was for the most recent acceptance, to get an idea where you stand.

Good luck to you :)

Ha!

That's so funny. I'm in the process of retaking several classes because I got Bs in them undergrad 14 years ago.

I can't decide how far to go - how many to retake, i.e. if I should even retake my English Lit classes from freshman year that I got Bs in....

I'm getting really anal about it...I want straight As...ack!

You also need to understand how your desired schools will look at the grades. Will they average them, take the higher of the two, take the B since it's a decent grade, ???

You also need to decide how likely you are to perform better than a B during the next go around. Was your teacher notoriously hard? Can you get somebody who's notoriously easy? Were you close to an A but just didn't quite get there? Assuming you worked at it and earned a middle-of-the-road B (again, a respectable grade), why would you assume that you'll get an A next time?

This part I don't know because I'm not on the admissions committee but if I were, I would frown a bit on folks who are repeating classes just to add a couple of grade points here and there. If I were grading candidates, I rather see someone take the next class in the series or something else of use rather than just retaking a class in which they did fine (though not perfect).

At the CC I was attending, folks were routinely retaking classes multiple times in order to get an A. Does anybody have it on good authority that nursing programs actually endorse that approach?

I guess it just depends on the program.

For what it's worth, I had lots of B's and C's (and a few F's and some A's) as an undergrad long ago. Rather than retaking all of those classes, I took new ones and did really well. It got me into a DEMSN program.

I think you'd be wasting your time retaking literature to try to get an A over a B earned long ago. I think you'd be more competitive if you showed that you're broadening your base rather than just trying to up your numbers. Just my opinion...

The school I am applying to doesn't look at that. You do have to have over a specific GPA, but that does not play into whether or not you get in. The main thing they look at for us is our NLN entrance exam scores. I would talk to the schools your applying to and see what they say.

No, and if you check, many colleges will not allow you to retake a class you got a B in.

I would re-take it in a cold second! Competition is very strong, even with a 'shortage' of nurses. There does not seem to be a shortage of applicants!

Not I. I'm only retaking a D from 10 years ago. My school could care less about GPA, as long as you are over 2.5. I'm close to a 3.0.

FYI, most state college will not let you take class more than twice, without paying extra. The subsidized rate from the state only gets to be used twice per student. You take it 3 times, you pay a lot more.

Heres to getting an A or B the second time around.

Thank you, I appreciate your perspective.

I don't *think* I would be taking the classes just to "up my points", though of course that is part of it, and I have a problem with being a bit of a perfectionist which plays into the GPA thing...

I don't think I could retake English Lit because it just seems too basic, but I will keep looking around at other interesting classes.

i dont know how ur school works...but in mine (i used to work for admissions) if you retake a course that you got a B in, and then you get a C (or even lower), they take the C (and use THAT for your cumulative GPA)since it was the retake. So you also have to think about the "what if I get a lower grade" instead of actually going up.

just a thought.

I am retaking Chemistry because I got a B, and I need an A.
