I would like to know if all international educated nurses have to undergo SEC assessment or only those having 3 years diploma ? or those having less experience or what ?
What exactly are the parameters on which CARNA decides if one has to go for SEC assessment before taking CRNE ?
can anybody please tell me ?
thanks.

My understanding SEC is required after your transcripts are individually reviewed so all depends on how they are broken down and what the nursing board are requiring
yeah but is there any way to self assess if I would be requiring SEC or not. is it only dependent on ones education (transcript) or work experience in certain areas is also evaluated ?
do they give reasons why they are recommending SEC in the letter they issue ?
Nurses gone through SEC are requested to please share their experiences..
thanks

It is done individually and no way to do a self assessment.
very strange.
but there must have some criteria on which they assess ..
atleast one should have an idea prior to applying as this involves a huge cost, money and time both. isn't it ?

hi! I am also trying to find answer to my question. I applied in CRNBC after a friend of mine from college.. was given an eligibility to sit for CRNE. I was expecting to receive the same assessment and was hoping also to get an eligibility.. instead i got a letter from CRNBC asking me to come to surey B.C to have that SEC Assessment and since this will involve a lot of money, ithink this will be the end of my dream of becoming an RN in BC canada. I am dissappointed and shock at the momemt..i don't know what to do next..

As a rule you will need an assessment when you're short in one or more of the 5 areas (mental, peds, surgical, medical obstretrics) theoretical or practical or when there are doubts that your education is equivalent to the canadian one.
Every applicant is assesed individually so the outcome of 2 applicants who went to the same school can be different.
When I hear from filipino nurses that they share a patient with several students or what placements/work counts as clinical I would expect that there will be more and more SECs for reletivaly new grads from the Philipines, just because this kind of education is certainly not equivalent.
Every province in Canada has there own assessemnt and rules how they deal with IEN's.
So maybe you should ring your College of Nursing and ask.
Just reviewed your posts, 2 questions, in what area are you short? If it's only one your SEC will only take a day.
Second: Are you still not working? Because if you haven't worked for 2 years or longer, despite of your previous experience your chance will be minimal to zero to find an employer straight away in any foreign country, without an adaption course or refresher.
hi!5cats,
thanks for your concern, yes i haven't been working for more than 2 years now.I worked in saudi arabia for more than 8 years in a tertiary hospital under JCIA (owned by the king of k.s.a).
I graduated from the Philippines but i am a resident of another country. Since i left saudi arabia i devoted my time to my daughter, and since she's on pre-school now, i am trying my luck for my Canadian dream. I always dream of living and working in Canada since i was young despite being a resident now of another country other than Philippines. The decision made by CRNBC was really dissapointing on my part. Yes, they want me to complete SEC on mental,med-surg and maternal/newborn nursing as well on child health. On sept. I will be totally out of practice for 3 years. I just wish that they will give me a chance to prove myself. Sad.
But they do, SEC is your chance, if you're good you'll be eligible for CRNE. Unfortunatly they want to test all areas that'll be 5 days. Don't know if you have to pay in BC for it, but if your dream is Canada that's the way to go.
You can prepare for it.
good luck
no..they said..i don't have to pay for it. But being a mummy, i can't just go there. I need to invest huge amount of money on this.
Anyway, i always hold on to God's promise.
"For I know the plans that I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." [Jeremiah 29:11]"
Thanks so much 5cats!

j8win, it appears they will be assessing your entire nursing education. I'm afraid that is not a very good sign. The SEC in BC is a relatively new process; it has only been required for less than a month and the model they are following is the one developed in Alberta at Mount Royal College. I understand that Saskatchewan has also begun requiring an SEC, although their website has not been updated to reflect that. When the College of Nurses determines that an SEC is needed, they have examined the curriculum of your school, the content of your clinical experiences and the number of hours of clinical practice obtained in each of the five major disciplines: medicine, surgery, psychiatry, obstetrics and pediatrics. If yours don't meet or exceed the minimum standard in Canada, you're going to need the SEC to prove your knowledge and skills. I expect that it will become the usual practice across the country to require some sort of SEC assessment for IENs, with different degrees of scrutiny depending on where the education was obtained.
