Because I always wanted to be a doctor... :)
If I'm going to pursue nursing, I fully intend to keep going until I have a graduate degree. I'm thinkinf CRNA, or PA, or WHNP/CNM. Most NPs I'm not all that impressed with around here and from personal opinion from family members.
I want to end up with a job where I have a higher level of authority and personal responsibility.
Higher education seems to be way to attain that.. I'm only recently gave up my pre-med dreams (but they're still lingering and resurface from time to time)...
I like the science aspect of it combined with the nursing care they do give (since they are nurses and not MDs).
I had though about NP as well (because like Manna I have always wanted to be a MD) but the pay is *terrible* for all they do and I dont see a whole lot of jobs around here (at least not right now though that can always change). CRNAs are definatly in demand. I would also be interested in PA in the future as well.
Also I want a more independent role as a nurse, I want to be respected as well. Plus all the extras like it does pay very well and I'm not ashamed to admit I want to make good money for my family. And just the more I read about it, it sounds more and more interesting to me.
Besides I love school and I love learning, I have loved every class I have taken so far! So why not go all the way I figure??
One day in the future for fun I want to get a degree in Art History as well :)

Me too... go Northwestern! woot!
well maybe not.. :zzzzz
I dont know what i'll do after I get my BSN.. something definitely.. im never satisified.
If it wasn't for the residency at 30-35k a year id do that
CRNA is a nurse anesthetist, fnimat1
I'm thinking of going for the CRNA because it just fascinates me. If I went into medicine, I would've probably gone the anethesiologist route. I always thought that would be a totally cool job.
I'm with marilynmom and a lot of other folks when they say they are taken in by the independent nature of the job. Plus the money ain't bad!
As of now, I'm going to ACNP route, but I may change to pre med, not sure yet.
One reason why I'm still leaning with NP is because I want more advanced practice, but not real interested in owning my own practice. I would like to live in as many places as I can and NP will give me this option. I know some NP"s, they like what they do, I like what they do, so, I'm going for it. I'm taking as many advanced classes as I can towards MD so if I change my mind it won't be a huge ordeal.
I think for me, it was after reading some of the post in the "would you recommend nursing" heading. Sorry bad joke. The real real reasons are like some of the others have posted: autonomy, respect, challenges, job opportunities, income(especially with two kids schooling to worry about), flexibility in work schedules, types of specialties, as well as places of employment(hospitals, locums, self employed, anesthesia groups).
I think the biggest reasons for me aspiring to become a CRNA is the fact that I think the work fits with my personality. So when you combine that with everything else, it just seems natural for me to go in the CRNA direction. B.T.H

Seems like on OPM and SDN there are a few BSNs who are going/went MD?
So why are you letting the residency income scare you off, if that's what you really want to do?
I'm waffling again too.. EEK! Gosh, if I'd only finished college the FIRST time I went (I was a bio-engineering major that time around), I couldn't been through by now.. and not had this worry about career vs. family.

I hear so much about future nurses on this board saying they want their CRNA. Whats the big attraction? The high pay wage? Always being in the surgery area? I now work at a level 1 trauma hospital as a nurses aide and I float the whole hospital. I know I don't want to be a psych nurse and OB and PEDS can be had by those who really want that speciality, not me. I think I want to work in the ICU. My best friend is a ICU nurse and is travel nursing in California right now. So I have had a dose of what I'm getting myself into here. My friend whos a travel nurse says its not worth it pay wise to get her BSN right now but she will when she's ready to move to a desk job she says. I know I at least want my BSN (I think I'll do it part-time after I graduate with my RN) so when my knees give out or I'm tired of floor nursing I have it. And I know I want it because I don't want to be turned down for a job I see in the future because I don't have it and someone else does.
