Hello, I am in the middle of the interview process. Currently looking at Minute Clinic or an Urgent Care fellowship with Wellnow Urgent Care.

Which should I do? I have done the MC student preceptorship so I have some idea what I am looking at, but I think the urgent care fellowship will make me a more attractive candidate.

Define fellowship. I would always recommend this if it is a true fellowship and not some extended orientation. The lower salary is worth it.

It would be one year long with didactic portions, skills training. We would start with one or two patients per hour and work our way up. The salary would only be 75k.

Minute Clinic would have very minimal training, but pay would be 51/hr.

75k isn’t bad

While I agree the fellowship is likely the better option and I agree 75k isn't bad, depending on the market rates it might also not be good.  Based on a 40 hour work week with no other income the $51/hr is over 100k so that is a significant difference.  Plus the hourly rate could potentially involve overtime which a salary position would not.  Maybe the lower paying position has stellar benefits however that make up for the difference in the offered pay?

If money were the only factor that is certainly something to consider.

Is there a particular reason you recommend the urgent care fellowship over Minute Clinic?

For me, it would be a pay cut from what I make as an RN with almost 8 years of experience. However, after a year, I think the pay would go up to 100k+ per year.

I am not familiar with the benefits of the urgent care position, but I imagine they are not as good as Minute Clinics. While money is definitely a factor for me, I think the supportive environment would be really helpful as a new grad, and I may not be stuck working every other weekend like at CVS Minute Clinic.

It would be excellent as numenor said to have a fellowship on the application though. Esp w all the NPs floating around now.

It would make you a far more competent provider. I sucked up the low 70k fellowship I did and doubled my salary the next year. Minute Clinics are dead ends for learning and growth IMO.

Your salary is low for a reason, they are investing and training you. Your RN experience is meaningless in this equation. You are back to being a novice again.

Umm a fellowship is like a residency and if its anything like mine, its worth 10x more than my actual NP Program was. Fellowships are rare and highly sought after. 1 year of salary loss is trivial and one could moonlight or work elsewhere as a RN. A minute clinic is a dead-end job and will box someone in with an algorithmic skillset.

I went from making well over 100k as a RN to a 70k NP in a fellowship doing 70-80 hour weeks. Yeah it was not fun but the experience was priceless. I was leagues above any NP in my area afterward and my hospital now refuses to hire NPs unless they have done one. The comparison between new NPs (fellowship vs non) is STARK.
