Where to take Pre-Reqs?

Published

I have finally decided to take the plunge and start the path to becoming a nurse. I have already completed my B.A. and would be interested in an accelerated nursing program. I will need to take all the pre-reqs somewhere since my B.A.was in English/Journalism.

What colleges in the NYC area (since I already live here) have people attended that have good reputations for the pre-reqs that are required. Which schools are affordable?

I am looking into the NYU program as my top choice, so I would want to take classes that they would accept.

Can anyone share their experiences with pre-reqs and give me some school suggestions.

Thank you!

I am a new NYU nursing student and I was going back and forth about where to take my pre-reqs as well. Finally, I decided the best and quickest thing to do was to take the pre-reqs at NYU. They have a program where you can take all the pre-reqs in one semester and then start the accelerated program. Otherwise it would take me a full year just for pre-reqs. This way, I will take the courses I need in the Fall and then start the accelerated program in the Spring, for Spring 2011 graduation date. I know, NYU is expensive and I could have taken the pre-requisites somewhere else, but I liked the certainty that I was already in the nursing program, that I didn't have to deal with frustration of registering for courses as a non-degree student, and that it would only take me one semester for all the pre-reqs.

Good Luck!

You can also take them at a CUNY. I find that the most affordable. You'd register as a Non-degree student and just take the courses you need.

I agree with Sgm228. You can take the class as a non-matric at CUNY. The only problem with that is those classes are the first to go. I am a new transfer student to Lehman College. I wanted to take API ...the class has been full from late March-April. I only got in the class because I talked to one of the professors.

The thing is non-matric students can only register after everyone and science course(particulalrly AP and chem) are the first to go.You should apply as a part-time student who is matriculated. They don't know you might not graduate there with a degree. But at least you will be able toapply earlier and not have to wait until a couple weeks before classes start while hoping someone dropped the class.

I plan on transferring to another school in the Spring if I get into that BSN program.

You could alsodo your classes on the SUNY Learning Network if you care structured enough that you can manage an online course.

I tried the CUNY route but could not get into any of the science classes. Go with SUNY Learning Network! Tuition is cheap. Applying and registration was a breeze. It's true you do have to be more disciplined to for online classes but I found it balanced by you have more flexability to pace yourself.

Avoid CUNY at all costs. You will not get the classes you need, especially if you're not going to matriculate. Half the time the students who need the classes can't get them. I was a pre-nursing student at CUNY, my registration date was two weeks after it opened and all the science classes still filled up to the point where I had to take a class that gave me about a 5 hour gap from my other classes that day. There's such a fight to get classes in CUNY schools that I don't think it's worth it, even for the money. I just took the pre-reqs at the school I applied to, it was expensive but I always got a choice between science classes without worrying about them filling up. Half of the science classes are still open with a few seats left and school starts in three weeks!

I would say CUNY is the best place to take the pre-requisites cos it's CHEAP. Nursing program in CUNY though is another story.

What's wrong with Hunter's nursing program?

Nothing at all is wrong with it, if you can get in. And with over 400 people trying to get into about 80 slots, chances are usually slim to none.

I just tried getting into a&p at Hostos and it was a NIGHTMARE. I am so frustrated and nervous that I will never be able to take the pre-reqs I need to apply to schools.

Can someone give me suggestions about accelerated nursing programs that allow you to take the pre-reqs after you are admitted? Or other options for me to take pre-reqs in NYC?

Also, are online programs accredited and acceptable? I also thought SUNY wasn't accredited for some reason...

agh. I wish I had a life advisor right now.

Lilyflower, I posted above about NYU. They have all prereqs in one semester.

univ of rochester has online classes, pricey but they are quick and online, fastrack option.
